The problem I had with gran turismo was that it was so realistic it ceased to be fun.

IMO driving games should be slightly stylised such as with the burnout or the project gotham series.

I'd still say Need for Speed: Underground 2 is my favourite.
Heheh, I found that funny. So realistic it ceased to be fun. Gran Turismo? Nah. It's not all that realistic I assure you.
underground 2 was the perfect EXCEPT for the lack of police.
yes, that close to PERFECT.
especially the performance tuning and upgrading.

I have to put in some love to GRID too.

I bought it for a loust $3.74 on a Steam sale, and damn, it's beautiful, it plays wonderfully, the level of challenge is just right for me, but there's a wealth of options, including driving assists to turn off, and...

(I'm sure other games have done it but..)

The limited rewind feature! It just utterly destroys the one thing I always felt held back racing games as a genre. We've all done it, from Mario Kart to Gran Turismo, had a perfect 4 laps or so, we're coming up to the final corner and we spin out, and 7 computer players zip by. Cue intense frustration at a minor mistake costing you a solid well run race.

With rewind, you just slap the button, go back 5 seconds, and try again, however, it's limited, so it's not a cheat, and it penalises you financially for using it, so it's a tradeoff.

On top of that, every damn thing about GRID is just so polished, it's just been really pleasing every moment since it finished downloading, and the use of a 360 pad makes it so much better!

I've always felt a lot more happy coming last in a racing sim than GTR Evolution than I ever have coming first in an arcade racing game. I like it when my games make me work for my success, and racing sims just make you work much harder than arcade games - because you don't get a rewind in real life. As well as that, the challenge just makes racing sims far more exciting for me.
Entirely fair point, but for us casuals GRID is wonderful, all the fun without the frustration of failing at the last turn.

Also, is your avatar from CUBE? Reminds me of the speaker trap from Cube Zero.

If so, give Cube Experimental a go, the mod for Fallout3.

Burnout Paradise, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Midnight Club LA, and GTA IV are my favourites.

I was really big on Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Midnight Club 2, and NFS: Most Wanted, but I'll never grow tired of Road Rash on the Genesis.

Burnout Legends for 360/PS2/xbox insanely fast, nearly uncontrollable with awesome crashes. Plus traffic attack where you're just plowing hundreds of cars out of the way never gets old

I prefer Forza to Gran Turismo in the sim department.

In the more arcadey segment, my all-time favorites are Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed and Most Wanted.

And for deceptively complex pure arcade racing, nothing, NOTHING, can beat TrackMania.

Ya know, I'm being reminded of a lot of games I loved here, and I think the running theme is all the games I enjoyed have been based more around fun than simulation.

I think it's the difference between say 'Zombieland' and say, 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

Now I don't think many people would argue that Shawshank is the better movie, better acting, better story, better everything.

But fun? If you want fun, you're going to drop Zombieland into your DVD player.

Same goes for racing games, I don't have time to be tweaking my gear ratios, and if you enjoy the minutae of driving simluations, and test laps and realistic damage and qualifying laps etc, well, go ahead, it's not for me, give me Mario Kart, Burnout, Rock N Roll Racing, Carmaggedon, and GRID any day!

Burnout, for the gamecube. I'll never forget the joy of spiraling in midair between two bus's, in slow motion.
