So I just beat a game and it got me thinking about credits. Let's keep this simple:

What makes ending credits in a game good? Or at least what makes them not bad? What is your favorite example of credits in a game?

I like credits with jokes and Easter eggs, Lucasarts were great for this back in their graphic adventure days. Full Throttle had the open road as a background the the text scroll, with an army of toy bunnies stampeding down it at the very end, while Ride of the Valkyries played. That said ANYTHING is better than just a black screen with scrolling text.

Music is a very important part of the credits, and the visuals that go along with the credits can make them more entertaining.

One of my favourite examples are the ending credits of Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2 which featured all of the best music tracks from the game spliced together while cutscenes from Dynasty Warriors 5 play alongside them. Samurai Warriors 2 also had similar credits but with just one music track playing.

Then there are credits with little jokes in them such as the Crash Team Racing credits which features funny epilogues for all of the characters.

Then there are the ending credits that are great just because they have a nice and catchy song/track to go with them.

Finally...God Hand...just, God Hand.

This is one of the few credits I have ever been able to sit through, so its probably an example of good credits

I would say that music is probably the single most important thing to the credits to make them good/watchable.

Music is pretty much the only reason I tolerate credits. Case in point:

Just a good song and maybe some pretty pictures is all I ask for. Save your clever writing for the rest of the game.

Any ending that maintains and complements the themes and atmosphere of the game itself.

Having something good to watch/listen to is what makes credits watchable. A list of names in white against a black screen is boring, but put some good music, some visuals or pictures of the developer team and suddenly I'll sit through it. I'd say the most important thing about credits has to be the music choice.

Here are some of my favourites

Hearing Mark Hamill's Joker sing, especially after the ending to Arkham city, is both awesome, and terrifying.

Having the player character start singing along to the radio was really surprising and hilarious during my first play through, so having all the different voice actors sing together during the credits was really fun to listen to.

Portal wins. By a mile. Several miles in fact.

Honourable mention to Vanquish:

Second/third the calls for Portal and Arkham City, they both had me in peals of laughter.

Also, obligatory HL2:Ep2 nomination. I was stunned, gutted and transfixed listening to
Alyx' grief

Portal because of the songs in the credits, they're just too awesome and are great for karaoke.

Otherwise, anything that has you do something during the credits. I don't want to sit there and read a ton of names whilst listening to music, I want to do something interesting. Add in something for me to do, I don't entirely remember but I think Guitar Hero had a song you could play whilst the credits rolled and that's a good example, and I'll go through them. Otherwise, if it unlocks something I'll go away and make myself some food rather than watching them, and if it doesn't I'll skip them.

The Portal games win, always and for everything, even for contests that have absolutely nothing to do with games, credits, or music. Besides that, Flower makes its credits special by having them be an actual level, where each flower represents a person who worked on the game, and passing through the flowers sends their names floating into the sky.

The Portal credits rank very high among my favorite moments in gaming ever. I did not see something like that coming at all, and they were just so goddamn awesome. After I beat the game, I immediately went online and watched it another 10 times or so. I don't know why it had such an impact on me.

The only other game I can recall the credits of is Portal 2. I guess they were also pretty good, but they did disappoint me a little. (But how could they not after the sheer unexpected awesomeness of 'Still Alive?'

This is the one I was going to suggest. I found the portal credits amazing because of the song and the karaoke-esque lyrics on the screen. I was addicted to playing that song for a good while since and even had it as my ringtone. Can't think of any others to top it.

Very first thing that popped into my head were those credits.

For me, they beat Portal's ending credits. I just love that song. Especially after the whole ending scene.

I get chills every time I do that sequence, plus the credits afterwards.

Credits that are connected to the story you made, for example: fate/ stay night(visual novel) has different credits for each route, showing in the background of the credits pictures from the route and the weapon the portoganist used.

Ninja'd with vanquish, damn.

Honourable mention to Bayonetta, where the game shamelessly interrupts them... twice

I guess the one that has stuck alongside me the most is probably the end credits to the very first Metal Gear Solid. It's the song that does it for me, as does some of the Live action footage of Alaska and the post credits part. For those who wish to go on a nostalgia trip, here:

THIS! I can't imagine why its not been sad many other times in this thread.

I love portal, "still alive" and Jonathan Coulton in general, but I can't shoot and destroy the credits while listening to Still Alive, can I?
