definitely metal gear solid 3. really emotional.
I cried more than Big Boss did. It was epic.

I also have to mention Shadow of the Colossus. Especially when Agro comes limping into the temple.
just went on to youtube to re live that.

Love SotC. one of the best endings in a game. emotional.

no infact i'd say it is the best endings ever. Western games just don't really do "emotionally involved" as well as Japanese games do or at least used to.

as for more recent i'd say mass effect was impressive, Portal 1 and 2 just made me really happy and was very fitting for the content of the game.

Red dead redemption to. good ending.

ahh people keep reminding me of others. seriously i think games do endings far better than films (although games do cliche far too often)

I liked the end of Portal 2's co-op:

You help GLaDOS find a bunch of humans, you dance in a pretty funny fashion, then you explode.

I think it might be Portal 2. The roller-coaster of emotions I was in when I finished it has been unrivaled.

Joy, of winning.
Fear, of being shot by turrets.
Pity, for GLADos.
Awe, for Valve and their creation.
Sorrow, because it was over.
Utter amazement from the turret aria and the fantastic last portal.

Mindblowing stuff.

Other than that;

Mass Effect 1 and 2
Witcher 1 (because it is one of FEW games nowadays that took the time to finish properly and WITHOUT a cliffhanger. THANK YOU CD PROJECT!)
Legacy of Kain: Defiance. The reunion of Raziel and Kain almost brought tears to my eyes.
Final Fantasy 8 and 9. Epic stuff.
The Whispered World. Pretty good actually. And a BEAUTIFUL game.

There are more, but there always will be.

While I don't remember a game which ending has been carved into my mind as outstandingly good, Portal 2's tipped be on the shoulder twice: First to tell me that the music is really well done and twice to tell me there's a chance of 75% Yahtzee will sound sad at the end of his Portal 2 review because "everything after space feels like a step backwords".

I'm a rock when it comes to emotional impact and things like "IN SPACE" or "ON FIRE" or "WITH TITS" or "HUUUGE ROBOTS AND BLADES" don't grab my attention, so yeah, that's probably part of the problem when it comes to choosing an ending for this thread. Part of the problem is also that endings tend to be unsatisfying by nature since your experience with the game now has come to an end and you'll know about pretty much all of the important plot points on your easter egg hunt during second playthrough, so there are no more WHAM! moments and the story is used like an unrechargable battery.

People, please use spoiler tags before I have to start editing your posts! That's a lot of work that I can't be arsed with, so just think before you post. Even for really old games, it doesn't take much work. Just put
Code:
[spoiler]
before the spoiler and
Code:
[/spoiler]
after.
For me, it's probably Portal 2. It may just be cuz it's the only game I've finished in a LONG while, but it was just all I wanted it to be and more. Plus I liked the song.
I also heard RDR's is great, unfortunately it's been spoiled so I won't bother with the game at all. So once again, use spoiler tags!

Most definitely Metal Gear Solid 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4.
The most definitely the speech at the end of 4 by Big Boss was epic...not to mention the background music. The Zero speech is still etched in my mind as a great knot to tie up the MGS saga. Although, MGS 3 had a fairly epic ending. There weren't many words to be said, but so help me, the actions and the background music sold it. It was a great, concrete ending/foundation for the series to flesh out (although it was the 3rd in the running series besides the Nintendo versions)

Mafia II (never played the first)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
Crisis Core
F.E.A.R.
Crysis... err... nevermind, Crysis 2 trashed the story and ruined it.
CoD: World at War (Russian side)

I don't understand why people are saying CoD4? It ended in the middle of a gun fight...

Halo: Reach.
Not the bit where the PoA flies away, the bit after.
Just... the mix of story and gameplay. Noble 6 knows he's not going to make it out alive, but because you are Noble 6, you know this is your last fight too.
So you make it count.

Red Dead Redemption's was also amazing.
I shot Edgar in the knees, the shoulders, and the balls twice, before pouring Bait on him and watching as the wolves came.
In the game, of course, he was dead and the wolves just stood there, but in my imagination revenge was sweet as he, unable to move properly, was eaten alive.
I also killed his wife and brother. He didn't spare my family. Uncle + John = 2. Two lives for two lives, old man.

And was I the only one who loved Black Ops' ending?
I mean, considering Reznov is actually alive, it was pretty cool. But the final mission was epic. None of this betrayals business of the MW2, you just go in old-style and beat the baddies. On Veteran... man, it's epic. Real tactical movements as I used a picked up 74u to fight me and my bros' way through, before personalyl strangling Dragovitch and stopping the broadcast.

in my opinion?

Doom, Wolfenstein, Serious Sam

you know, the kind of games with the "everything went better than expected" kind of ending, where you do what you were sent to do and don't try to pull any pretentious plot twist that doesn't affect shit

Ah, i have to agree on Portal 2. Excellent composed ending.

Going a bit back into the past:
Vampires: Bloodlines, when you make the right decisions.
Saints Row 2:
It just satisfying shooting Vogel in the Face and watching as he falls out of the skyscraper ans splattering hundreds of meters below, getting into a Helicopter and: "So... what are we doing now?" - "Whatever we WANT"

Ah, and of course "Legacy of Kain: Defiance" The whole series has a weird but awesome plot... and even if it is only half-explained, the end is cool as hell.
