I love Persona 3/4's bittersweet endings where the MC

sacrifices himself but sticks around to keep a promise(P3) and P4 MC leaving, the good bye scene got to me and the song they play there wasn't helping

Kingdom Hearts 1 had one of the best endings for me. Though I love the series I almost wish that they hadn't made a second one so as to preserve that bittersweet moment.
This too though I'd have been pissed had they not made KH2.

As for a more comical ending Army of Darkness for the whole store scene and Darkman for the Bruce Campbell cameo

Fight Club. Without a Doubt the best ending...and film. Especially with Where is My Mind? by the Pixies...

Got to love that David Fincher.

...in fact, I think every second of that film is Solid Gold.

Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts 1&2.
I really liked them both and they both made me think.
The first one more than the second for me. The second is just making me cry every day I don't have confirmation of a 3rd.

I'd probably have to go with the most recently aired (in the UK) episode of Heroes. Samuel is so fucking awesome it is almost unfathomable.

As far as games go, I always thought Fatal Frame 2 delivered well emotionally. I think "I am the wind", the song at the end of SOTN was just beautiful. Of course, Portal is still my fave by far for laughs.

Plenty of movies to choose from, but I'm goin with Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlines. Always gets me that one.

For a videogame, FFX takes it for me. I've never been brought closer to tears by a game before or since.

For a movie, Gladiator, athough I watched a very curious film called Versus the other day, some Japanese nonsense but with the best WTF ending I've ever seen.

After defeating the bad guy and rescuing the girl, riding off into the sunset on a motorbike to live happily ever after, you assume the movie is over.

WRONG!

It then cuts to 99 years later where you find out that the good guy was actually as bad as the bad guy, has destroyed the world and now is going along with the bad guys original plan.
I remember Versus. If I recall, it's not that the good guy's actually evil. The bit at the end is more to show that the cycle of reincarnation hasn't been broken and that the conflict continues into the future, but that sometimes the roles change.

Final Fantasy 10. Yuna dances and the aeons die, Tidus fades. "Yuna, I have to go." The running dive off the airship, past Braska and Auron to high-five Jecht, it's friggin awesome.

And Dissidia: Final Fantasy, the parting words before each of them fades are really cool.

Tidus: Gotta go, huh. Don't worry, the crystal knows the rest of the way. And besides, I'm always right here.

Zidane: We're not vanishing, we're returning, to where we're supposed to be.

Squall: Perhaps, we can go on another mission together again someday.

Cloud: Not interested.

Terra: I think I've learned how to keep going, thank you, and take care.

Bartz: When you're having the most fun, that's when time always flies.

Cecil: It's mine to pass on, this strength I've gained from everyone.

Onion Knight: Everyone, thank you!

Firion: This isn't the end, another dream is waiting to begin.

Warrior of Light: May the light forever shine upon us.

Mass Effect 1 ending sequence, from Ilos onward. I thought, and still think it was one of the most epic endings to any game.

For films, despite it being a subpar horror, the ending of The Mist was astounding.
That screwed with my head so much... the most evil headfuck ending in cinema history. Talk about bleak...

I agree on ME1 as well, both it and its sequel had me punching the air and cheering at the end.

I was in tears of awe from the pure epicness of ME2's ending though.

Joker arrives in the Normandy firing off an assault rifle... they escape as the base explodes behind them and the choir joins in on the theme... my god. so epic I almost came...

Ocarina of Time is probably the best I can remember.

That or Half-Life 2. I love the super gravity gun.

The dark side ending for KOTOR 1 made me feel good. There are probally better ones, but I can't think of any at the moment.
I spit on your questionable morals!

I liked the Light Side ending much better - its so hard being a bad-cop for a 30 hour game!

OT: Mafia.

BEST. ENDING. EVAR.

[small]Some of you may have begun to wonder if I pleasure myself over this game, and I can tell you this:

Another vote for Mass Effect 1 and 2

Have to also say Far Cry 2. Even though most people scratch their heads and say WTF? The meaning of it was very clear and very well done I thought.
I agree. The final, linear hour of that game was great. By far the best part.

I loved the Apocalypse Now reference too.

The ending made sense to me too, though it did feel a little too abrupt and it could have given you a bit more character development.

The best endings were in Bioshock 1 and 2, Mass Effect 1 and my favorite Advent Rising.

The ending of Fallout 3 was insanely awesome. 0.0

Though for a good ending, I'm going to have to go with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Tenchu 2, Dino Crisis 2 and Kingdom Hearts.

Dragon Age:Origins after romancing Morrigan and having the child and ME 1&2 endings(paragon) were awesome.

Gonna get me flamed,
Favorite of all time: Avatar (I loved it because it made me feel good, i thought it ended the best way possible.)
Second: Titan AE (Planet... ... ... Bob. Hee Hee)
For a game: MGS3 (Didn't solve all that much, and was really long, but i enjoyed the emotion in it)

Hmm, good endings:

Mass Effect 1 and 2
Dragon Age
Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal (I just like saying BHAALSPAWN)
Portal (ok, the credits)
MGS4 (hated the game, but the ending was nice in wrapping things up)

Bad Endings:

Jericho
F.E.A.R 2
Planescape: Torment (awesome game, depressing endings)
inFamous
Bioshock (awesome game, bad endings)

I disagree. Jericho seemed to spit in my face for having gone through the trouble of finishing it. Those who have seen the ending should agree.
Come to think of it, I disagree, too. I played through Too Human solely out of anger and spite, and yet I was still given one last kick to the shin when the ending came so abruptly, offering no closure of any sort and, I almost can't bring myself to think it, ending the game way, way too soon.

I mean, really? That's all you had, Silicon Knights? That's where the money for Eternal Darkness 2 has been shovelled? I hope you all get SARS.

I loved the ending to Vampire: The Masqurade - Bloodlines.
Which one? Bloodlines had like 6 different possible endings, some of which were extremely different from one another.

Anyway, I'm gonna throw out Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhall. Fighting your way all the way from Candlekeep to the very throne of the dead God Bhall and doing battles for supremacy as the last of the remaining Bhallspawn to either end his threat once and for all or to yourself ascend as the new God of Murder... it's epic.

But then it's really more a matter of the 'getting there' that makes it so enjoyable rather than the ending itself. After all going from BG1 to the end of ToB takes easily upward of 100 hours, during which time you'll meet and interact with a whole cast of characters, fight against ancient evils and misguided good alike, and perhaps even follow one of the extremely well written romances. So when it finally ends once and for all, well, it's been one helluva ride!
