I don't know about the 'greatest' fighters ever, but my personal favourites were Soul Calibur 2, Tekken 5, Guilty Gear (in general) and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. They all had interesting rosters, cool characters, impressive attacks and were fun to play.

I cannot, and will not, be forced to decide between Super Street Fighter 2, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Super Smash Bros Melee.

SSBB, because theres so much variety and so many characters. the only thing that could do it better is to increase Ganon´s speed and add more character.
I agree. I play that game everyday. But for a realism fighter. Virtua fighter 5. Nothing beats that.

Rampage was really fun, although that might not be "Fighting" enough for you, me and my buds always ended up killing each other anyway...

If not that then Super Smash Bros. All three (Wii, Gamecube, N64).

No love for Samurai Shodown 2? From before the SNK bosses were constant exercises in head-melting difficulty?

well in non specific order and I've played my share of fighters.

- Smash bros. series for their chaotic clashes.
- Street Fighter series. I know I couldn't just pick one.
- Samurai Shodown 2 and 4
- Garou Mark of the wolves you don't get better looking 16-bit sprites than this.
- Last Blade 2 (whothewhatnow) Well I guess most of you people heard of it. It's a great game much like SS but with a different flair it seems calmer and quite stylish.
- Guilty gear 2 The midnight carnival #reload. Because it's just awesome.
- While not a VS fighter I really loved Sengoku 3 as well.

I prefer arcade style combos over dail-a-combo fighters makes button bashing a little less usable.

I love SNK but they hate me because of their GODDAMN bosses.

Seriously. Those bladed-coat wearing assholes can suck a dick.

Medabots AX: Rokusho Version for the GBA. Simple, easy to pick up, incredibly easy.

The king of the monsters series, or PRIMAL RAGE

Oh Primal Rage. The raptor was good, but the long neck snake like dude that spit acid was my favorite

Soul Calibur 3 was amazing except for the the wonky AI difficulty. I was also a fan of Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore, and for my old PS One days Rival Schools >.<
