Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. What a brilliant game. Complex, yet approachable due to the (unmatched to date) training mode. A plethora of moves, but only three buttons so you have complete control with a finger on each button. Challenging single player mode which slowly ramps up the difficulty and has lots of fun cosmetic extras to collect. No unlocking bullshit, every character selectable from the get go.

Everyone developing fighting games should play VF4E and see how to not screw up.

While I would say Street Fighter II 3rd Strike for its mechanics, but I honestly hate the roster of character and feel that they really jumped the shark, creating some amazingly lame concept characters which the overwhelming stupid... has spilled over into Street Fighter IV (Thank you Gill/Seth), so I am going to have to go back to Street Fighter Alpha 3.

It had a great roster, the X-Ism A-Ism V-Ism meant that each character could have entirely different movesets or playstyles. The Gameplay was fast, but precise and balanced and the game had a multitude of layers and levels of play that made it easy to learn, difficult to master without resorting to spamming light punch in a corner, or having only 2 characters that were viable on a competative level AKA Street Fighter IV.

Plus, V-ism Combos were a hell of a lot of fun.

Street Fighter IV easily acquires my vote. Impressively balanced, great visual style and it has Rufus!
Come on, what more could you want?

My top choices are:
Killer Instinct- you know...it's like Mortal kombat, only GOOD

Soul Calibur 2 and Broken Destiny- The only ones I have played and were quite fun. Broken Destiny from what I hear is like a more balanced version of 4

Smash Bros 1- Just chaotic fum

Guilty Gear Accent Core plus- fun and balanced

Dissidia- One of the most original and balanced fighters to come out in a LONG time. It's so much fun and it mixes RPG and Fighting mechanics so well. Seriously, most replay value out of any other fighting game I have played.

Halo is fighting game..
...what? I hope that was a joke. I really pray you don't try to bring silly semantics into this.

Only when you run out of ammo...so Nope!
While I do agree with you, the actual concept of this thread as I'm pretty sure you already know, is towards the "Fighting 2d/3d graphic games" as so many people have already spoke of.

Really..what are we doing when we have ammo? Playing cards? I would think the players are...fighting...

I 100% agree. Although VF5 comes close to toppling it as my personal fav.

If we are talking 2D fighters then I'd have to go for StreetFighter Alpha 2. Tonnes of options, characters and awesome fighting.

An honourable mention goes to IK+. Superb, even after all these years.

The king of the monsters series, or PRIMAL RAGE

Awesome game.
My favorite fighting game series is Mortal Kombat. Favorite of those is Deception on the Xbox.

Edit: Why do I love it? I grew up on Mortal Kombat and I never really liked other fighting games (other than Primal Rage, UFC: Undisputed and Soul Caliber 2). It was a game that would bring my family together (seriously).

Tekken 3

Mainly because it's the only fighting game I actually like.

Soul Calibur 2 and 4. Lots of fun mechanics to make the game much more enjoyable then your typical button-masher, rock-paper-scissors, unbreakable-50-combos-that-you-have-no-chance-of-escaping-from fighting games.
