After having an arguement about this ver Xbox Live with a friend of mine (while playing SFIV), I was thinking - is there a general consenus on what is the best fighting series? Top 3? Top 5 even? What kind of judgement system do they use?

So I've decided to ask you - what do you think the best fighting series is? Why?

Obviously, I should go first. I would have to say the Dead or Alive series. Why?

-Good Story. For a fighting game, DOA has a pretty good, understandable story, that isn't contradicted by itself, and one that can be followed pretty easily.

-Excellent Balance. All of the characters are balanced and fun, and fit several playstyles. There are no true "god" characters in DOA - not playable ones at least. You never get beat simply because you picked a character.

-Good character design. Many of the characters, if idealistically proportioned, are far more fun and believable then other series, and cover the spectrum from "HOLY **** THATS AWESOME!" (Ryu) to "BAAWWW! Thats cuute....." (Hitomi, Lei Fang). Also their stories make a bit more sense, and sorta relatable (if we were all super-powered)....definitely more interesting then much of what comes out some games. Of course, several of them have boobies. Nice boobies. Always a nice bonus.

-Excellent Controls and Fighting System. The controls for the DOA series have always been precise, yet forgiving. Each character has a firm, varied move list, each with its own use. Further, DOA is perhaps the only fighting game with a viable, in-depth defensive game that involves actual moves and combos, and that doesn't rely on "armor" or frame-counting.

-Good Visuals.DOA has never been truly faulted for its visuals - after, they've never been bad for their times.

If I had to have an honorable mention, I said say Soul Calibur, because it has a decent, though simplistic defense game, and fairly good character balance.

Soul Calibur. I know it may sound lame but I truly love the level of customization in the recent ones... and while some find it just a novelty to have players from other games and movies join in the fight, I can't get enough of it. I used to kick ass as Link when I played it for Game Cube. The story was very weak, if existent at all.

Street Fighter. One of the more balanced fighting games, not perfect, but none of them are. Memorable cast, easy to pick up, requires strategy over combo memorization. Soul Calibur might have been my favorite if it wasn't for how much 4 sucked.

SoCal is great because it's a simple R/P/S system that is built on. KISS method shines through wonderfully.

I have always loved how Tekken feels solid without being clunky, probably my favorite fighting series.

MK was fun but since they went 3d it always feels wooden. Not fluid enough or something. It just doesn't feel right to me I guess.

DOA4 is almost the reverse of MK, in that it's so fluid yet quirky with how the combos could be streamed, also has the best parry system imho. Might be better if I tried an arcade stick but I dunno.

Never was much for the street fighter series, even though I did like how 2 worked. Still haven't played SFIV...

1) Well, as a card-carrying Capcom fanboy, I am under contractual obligation to say Street Fighter....but screw that, Soul Caliber. I don't understand the hate for IV that keeps showing up, I liked it. I like being able to make my own character and fight against characters from other series. It's fun.
2) Street Fighter. It's fun, intuitive and the 100 vs. Kumite mode is shipped direct from learning curve hell. In other words, it's huge amounts of frustrating old-school fun!
3) Naruto: Ultimate Ninja. I like beating the shit out of Hinata with Gaara. Sue me.
4) Mortal Kombat. Fatalities are just so much fun.
0) I have this dream of the Ultimate Fighting Game that has every character you've ever wanted in a fighting game ever and has a story that winds it's way around the different universes and storylines of the various series. Unfortunately, the licensing would be hell...I think I made a thread about this somewhere, I'll edit this post with it. Screw it, I'm going to make a new thread about it, because the thread I made was done in February, back when I had little to no thread making experience. Plus, I've done some more research about it so I'm gonna see if I can't attract some big name attention with this one...

It's interesting that you asked about the best game series, instead of an individual game. It's indicative of the repetitive and stale nature of the games in this genre, simply improving the graphics from their predecessors (sometimes) while barely changing core gameplay mechanics. They are almost as bad about this as the yearly Madden games.

I'm also a fan of Soul Calibur. I've played 2, 3 and 4. My original main was Talim (partially because she was the character with the least revealing clothing [see 3rd alternate costume] and the most fun play style to me), so I was ticked when they beat her over the head with the "nerf" stick two games in a row. Other than that, it's a game where you can use two completely different styles of character and still get good with them. I liked seeing custom characters in 3 and 4, although I couldn't tell which system I had more gripes with, 3's or 4's.

Well, allow me to give some individual game examples, then.

King of Fighters XI
King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match (aside from being 2D and a fighting game, doesn't play anything like KoF XI.)
Soul Caliber (original). Everything after SC2 was bleh. Even SC2 wasn't as good as the original game.
Tekken 5
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution

I used to like Soul Calibur until IV. That one's worse than III. Three showed such promise, and then Namco shat on it before tossing it out the door to the masses. Now it's SFIV sitting on top of the pile, which is nostalgia returned with perfection (barring a shitty end-boss character that I wish you could choose to not play).

Street Fighter. It really is the most polished, the best balanced, and the most elegant. They make strategic gameplay through a few move types and three planes of movement in a 2D environment. If that isn't elegant, than nothing is.

The KoF series. I guess that most things you can say about the KoF series can also be said about the SF series, but in the end it's also a matter of preference.

I have a spot somewhere in my heart for Bloody Roar, but I'd the prize goes to Guilty Gear, Soul Calibur or Samurai Shodown.

Street fighter because you dont have to memorize special moves, they're more or less straightforward and some of them are the same for more than one character. Also...
