I wonder if Super Smash Brothers is actually considered a fighting game? Most places seem to classify it as an action game...

Guilty Gear, it's all kinds of messed up, this appeals to me immensely.

I'm a big fan of Tekken's control scheme. Assigning a certain limb to each button is awesome.

When I was young, I played much Tekken. I was a badass Yoshimitsu. But now, I'd say that Super Smash Brothers Melee is the best. Very simple controls, great characters, fast-paced action, cool levels, and shocking depth. If Brawl had merely been a Melee clone with new characters and online, I would have placed it at the top.

I always liked the chaotic simplicity of the Smash Bros. series. I find them immensely more entertaining than the slower-paced "hardcore" fighters such as Tekken.

Street Fighter or Guilty Gear. Street Fighter because I practically grew up with it, and Guilty Gear because it is fucking awesome.

Arcana Hearts sucks donkey nipples, it had to be said.

If your answer with anything but Killer Instinct then you are wrong. Ok ok, Soul Calibur 2, smash bros (original), and Dissidia are also acceptable answers, but KI still > everything.

Ye Ar Kung fu. The original and still the best.

Maybe an honorable mention to way of the exploding fist.

I really don't play too many fighting games, so I'm really unfamiliar with certain criteria.

As for the fighting games I've enjoyed the most...hmm..Tekken, Guilty Gear, and Evil Zone (Just because of the neat animation).

After having an arguement about this ver Xbox Live with a friend of mine (while playing SFIV), I was thinking - is there a general consenus on what is the best fighting series? Top 3? Top 5 even? What kind of judgement system do they use?

So I've decided to ask you - what do you think the best fighting series is? Why?

Obviously, I should go first. I would have to say the Dead or Alive series. Why?

-Good Story. For a fighting game, DOA has a pretty good, understandable story, that isn't contradicted by itself, and one that can be followed pretty easily.

-Excellent Balance. All of the characters are balanced and fun, and fit several playstyles. There are no true "god" characters in DOA - not playable ones at least. You never get beat simply because you picked a character.

-Good character design. Many of the characters, if idealistically proportioned, are far more fun and believable then other series, and cover the spectrum from "HOLY **** THATS AWESOME!" (Ryu) to "BAAWWW! Thats cuute....." (Hitomi, Lei Fang). Also their stories make a bit more sense, and sorta relatable (if we were all super-powered)....definitely more interesting then much of what comes out some games. Of course, several of them have boobies. Nice boobies. Always a nice bonus.

-Excellent Controls and Fighting System. The controls for the DOA series have always been precise, yet forgiving. Each character has a firm, varied move list, each with its own use. Further, DOA is perhaps the only fighting game with a viable, in-depth defensive game that involves actual moves and combos, and that doesn't rely on "armor" or frame-counting.

-Good Visuals.DOA has never been truly faulted for its visuals - after, they've never been bad for their times.

If I had to have an honorable mention, I said say Soul Calibur, because it has a decent, though simplistic defense game, and fairly good character balance.
DOA = Unbalanced button mashing fanservice crap!

...

Virtua Fighter 4 > DOA Yep! I'm a huge VF fanboy!

*Runs for cover from hordes of DOA fanboys.
Understanding the counter system defeats button mashing.

Guilty Gear. Button mashing has never been so necessary.

I also like Darkstalkers due to the characters.

I like games in the vein of Capcom Vs. Marvel 2. Simply cartoony brawlers. I also enjoy Super Smash at times.

For more serious fighters? Tekken.

Tekken, because its not heavily based on boobs and doesn't rely on random button mashing to win. Also has a nice story if you look at the tension between the Mishimas.

Sorry in advance if my post is insulting.

Man, totally. Instead they just gave every character the ability to spawn items, and taped down the Slow-mo button.
