What do you think was the best film opening? I really liked Watchmen's opening, with the montage of various scenes throughout the vigilantes' history and Bob Dylan's The Times They Are a-Changin' playing in the background.

The opening scene to Akira.

The Matrix opening scene was pretty good, too. It set up the genre perfectly and tickled your imagination.

The Dark Knight was pretty amazing, as it seemed to set the pace that was continued til the very end. Star Wars also has to be mentioned.

The Wild One.

That scene of Marlon Brando riding down the road on his bike is so iconic and just screams badass.

Star Wars Episode 3 - that one looooong continous shot of the two starfighters weaving through that massive battle is just a sight to behold (and sounds awesome, too). The music of the opening battle is one of my favourite film music tracks ever. Basically, the whole thing until they crash in the hangar is pure fun.

The Two Towers - weakest of the LotR movies, best opening. Going back to Khazad-Dum right at the start was a bold move, that works beautifully. You've seen it before, and then you haven't, when this time we follow Gandalf down - and holy shit does he have the ride of his life; and so do we.

PotC At World's End - not really, but I always liked the idea that a Disney movie... opens with a young boy getting hanged o_O

My 2 favourite are my 2nd and 3rd favourite films, Four Lions and the Dark Knight. Four lions is just hilarious, sets the scene for the whole film, and TDK's is just spectacular.

Star Wars. Just the opening crawl and space battle between the Tantive IV and a star destroyer. Very well known, pure epic.

Oh yeah... that opening was awesome... though the film itself was actually pretty good, it's just... how can you follow up an opening like that?!

My pick goes to none other than Lord of War... it cannot be described how both thoughtful and demonstrative an opening sequence is.

EDIT: Bugger... beaten to it... ah well...

I'll add Sky Crawlers to the above then,

(minus the music...)
Still, find a better animated dogfight if you can...

YES.
It's so rare that a film has me hooked in the first five minutes, and Watchmen is the only film in recent memory to do so.

This is pretty awesome too, though my favourite is still Watchmen.

I can merely do as much as agree to the mention of Watchmen. Seeing the intro on youtube made me buy the movie, and I do not regret it for one bit.

A Space Odyssey's was very good too. Just the music and slow, magnificent pictures... Dunno, just sets the tone of the film I guess.

EDIT: I. GOT. NINJA'D. D:<

I also want to mention the title scene for the Game Of Thrones tv series. I love the way the music and animation just make it work.

And just because I am a rebel and want to go off topic, I will also mention Dark Souls because the intro to that is fucking glorious.
