2001 A Space Odyssey...

Kubrick is and always will be the best director ever.
This guy. This guy gets it.
If by it, you mean BANHAMMER!!

...Why he get banhammer?

OT: While I'm not a big fan of the movie, I know enough about it to cast my vote for Heavy Metal.

Trippy man.

EDIT: Either this one, or the opening massacre of Tremors 3 that I cannot seem to find on Youtube.

Because Burt Gummer is awesome.

Hmmm. Yes, yes, and yes to all those already mentioned: Watchmen, Star Wars, Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction, The Dark Knight, and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

My other picks go to: The Godfather, There Will Be Blood, The Social Network, and Adaptation.

Well, if we're going to go with the ratio of how good the opening sequence is with how shit the rest of the film is, then I'm going to vote for Sucker Punch I loved the opening sequence to that. It was pure cinema. If I'd known what the rest of the film was going to turn out like, I'd have walked out of the cinema straight after it.

The Dark Knight was pretty amazing, as it seemed to set the pace that was continued til the very end. Star Wars also has to be mentioned.
Fucking ninja'd.

I gotta say that TDKR also had a pretty good opening, I was just let down by the rest the film.

I really like the opening to The Departed. Jack Nicholson's voice and The Rolling Stones music just makes the little speech so enthralling. Still meaning to see the original Chinese film.

Still, find a better animated dogfight if you can...
Challenge accepted.

Watch in 1080 fullscreen for best effect.

As for the OP I've gotta go with one that's already been said: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Another good one is Gladiator. Not exactly a realistic show of Roman era battle, but fun to watch nonetheless plus that one pan-shot where they shot the roman artillery and archers opening fire on the Germanic tribes is breathtaking.

The Matrix.

Perfect example of an ending making me curious about the movie. Most of the others listed here are great movies, but they kind of let you know what sort of film you're about to watch. Watchmen is a superhero film, but it's about the downfall of those heroes, Departed is a gritty crime drama, The Dark Knight is the Joker vs Batman.

After the opening to the Matrix I knew this much:

1. There was an absolutely awesome chick who could leap incredible distances, dressed in black leather, and who could do amazing martial arts tricks.

2. There were men in suits called agents who could also do the leaping thing and were apparently really scary and possibly omnipotent.

3. Somehow, the chick got away from the Agents by running into a phonebooth, but I don't know how exactly she got away.

There are so many questions this scene raises which I want answered, and not one of the answers could be guessed by watching it. You would never guess that the Matrix existed, you'd never know who or what the Agents really are, and you'd have no idea about Neo and the one, which is why Trinity was in the MAtric in the first place, because she was trying to locate him.

Absolutely perfect hook of an opening.

You know I completely forgot that that even happened?

It must be nearly five years since I last watched that film. And I'm kind of glad it's been that long.

I like Scott Pilgrim's full intro. Good music and the closest it could get to making an introduction scene for the cast of characters without dragging out to long.

And Pulp Fiction's intro, because it raises a valid point.

From a film making standpoint, this might be the best special effects shot ever taken.

In it, we learn, without having seen Star Wars before, that:

1. The good guys are small.

2. The bad guys are huge, powerful, and seemingly indestructible.

and

3. The story doesn't take place on Earth (see two moons)

All in less than 10 seconds. That is shot composition at it's perfect core, and I haven't seen a more effective beginning since.
