Both of mine are slightly cheating but whatever. Due South has to be one of the best cop shows I've ever seen. A Mountie gets banished to the Chicago consulate after arresting a senior Mountie and embarrassing the Canadian government. He spends his off hours working with the Chicago PD. It was several years of weird awesomeness. Why cheating? Because it was primarily shown in Canada but had a cult following in the U.S.
The other show was Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Also a mid-nineties show, but made and broadcast in China. I imported the DVDs of it a few years ago. It was entertaining because it was and entertaining because it was absurd. Some of the absurdities were budget related. In the first season of the show you didn't get to see battles. You saw reaction shots to duels and the loser's head was shown afterwards. I'm rather certain they only had one fake head. So in spite of some of the actors looking completely different, their death head looked the same. I will also never forget the scene where a group of grown men, the leaders of their nation, find a box of candy in an office. They all draw their swords and proceed to have a song and dance number for joy at finding the candy! And this was meant to be a serious drama. I will admit that some of the fun came from subtitle oddities. At one point a king and his advisers are discussing a secret plan. The subtitles cut off right before the plan is discussed, and came back on just as soon as they finish. Yet aside from the silliness it was an epic story of war, palace intrigue, and betrayal.
