Beatrix from ffix, she is an amazing character. First of all in combat she is a paladin, she has most of Steiner's most powerful sword attacks, she can tank fairly well, and she has some very useful white magic, the only downside is her shallow mp pool. Also her sword Save The Queen is potentially the most powerful weapon in the game (it gets stronger as she levels up).

As a character she has an interesting developmental arc where she goes through a dilemma of duty vs what is right, in fact she is an antagonist for half the game, and she fully wipes out the player party Three Times!!!, I am just sad she wasn't a permanently playable character.

If any more proof is needed listen to her theme "Rose of May" it is one of my favourite peices of music ever, and one that I have learnt to play on piano. It matches her character perfectly almost sounding like and elegant and refined war march, based upon the block chords.

Anyway i'll stop blabbing now, but i do believe that Beatrix is the best Final fantasy if not the best videogame character of all time.

Only ever played XII, XIII and XIII-2. I have a feeling that if you asked one of my younger brothers this would be a much longer list.

Balthier (FFXII) - He's already been mentioned but I have to mention him again, just for his voice alone. I just love that voice. It's part of the reason I like Fenris is Dragon Age II. Gideon Emery uses the same voice for him as well.

Other notable mentions
Basch (FFXII)
Sazh (FFXIII)
Lightning (FFXIII)

Wakka - people didn't seem to like this guy, but I thought he was great. Good voice actor, overly enthusiastic and a bit of a buffoon, but ultimately trying to help. I even liked that he had racist tendencies he had to overcome - from the point of view of an islander who had his friends and family killed by Sin, who utterly believes that technology and people like the Al Bhed are causing Sin to remain, his outlook made sense. It was cool seeing him overcome it.

Jecht - you had to dig a little bit to find out who Jecht really was, and that made me appreciate him even more. I love the spheres you can find that show him going from an insecure drunk with nothing to lose to realizing the scope of the threat the world was facing. He makes the biggest sacrifice of all at the end, and when you go inside Sin and see him recreating the world from his memories and trying to hold onto his sanity while the monster around him destroys everything I felt real pity for him.
Thanks for that. I would've posted a similar analysis on Wakka but didn't want to seem too long-winded/biased for my favourite game in the series. How often does the good-natured comic relief character show such bigotry, go through a crisis of faith like this and come out a better person for it? Jecht is good too; he's like a walking rebuke to all the complaints about FF protagonists/antagonists not being manly enough. His voice and attitude reminds me of Hercule/Mr.Satan from Dragonball, except his strength is not remotely faked:

Both of these characters are great.

And dangit, I want to go play FFX again.

Balthier was a fantastic character. Personally, I feel that XII had a fairly weak cast (Vaan and Penelo are pointless, YMMV on Ashe and Fran), but both Balthier and Basch were very good.

It's been forever since I played FFIX, but I still remember Beatrice. I remember being surprised by how much a recurring boss character developed over the course of the game. Good stuff.

Because they're men who look and act like men.

Not androgynous, not whiny, and don't look like they just fell out of a wardrobe.
This exactly. There aren't a lot of FF characters I really like, so I could only name a few myself (Cid, Auron, Vivi, Delita).

Every character in the Final Fantasy franchise is the best character compared to Final Fantasy 13's Lightning though. One of the worst protagonists of all time in every possible way. Irresponsible, hateful, condescending, pessimistic, foolish and violent.

Let's see:

From VII, there's got to be Cid. He's a tough old bastard. And really, he has one of my favorite lines in the entire game. In fact, it's one of the first things he says, and as soon as he said it, I thought to myself "okay Cid, you've officially won me over". That line? "Sit the fuck down and drink your fucking tea!". Poetry.

From X, I'm gonna be a HUGE bandwagon jumper and say Auron. How could I not? He's awesome. He checks off all the boxes on the badass list quite nicely. And, again, he has my favorite line in the game. Ahem:

"Now, this is it! Now is the time to choose! Die, and be free of pain, or live and fight your sorrows! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!". A motivational genius, that man.

And lastly, there's Sazh, from XIII. Admittedly, I still need to finish XIII, so this might not be fair, but I think Sazh was just really endearing, and stuck out to me, even while I was still playing.

Funny how all three of my choices are the "old grizzled bastards" from their respective games.

Auron from FFX is still my favorite but FFXII set a new high point for amount of really good characters.

I always felt Beatrix was just a little too much like Celes, and Celes gets to star in an Opera, so she wins for me as a more complex character... but yeah, Beatrix had her moments :)

I dunno... I haven't had a good experience with Final Fantasy lately. Not just because some internet critics ***** about them either, because I truly had to force myself to complete a few of them. I had to say that to preface this however;

I really liked Sazh Katzroy from FF XIII (god it still feels weird to use X's instead of V's). He climbed to the top of my list because he was in the only character I could Identify with at all in FF XIII. I had empathy for him and spiteful bitter vile disgust with everyone else. I don't know what they says about me as a person but ever other character in FF XII made me giggle with pleasure any time they went through personal turmoil, but Sazh I felt real sadness for him more than once.

My second favorite character from a final fantasy series seems to be a tie between Kain Highwind from FF IV and Red XIII from FF VII and if that isn't enough V's I's and X's to confuse me I don't know what is. Reasons are cloudy on these characters, I just liked them is all.

Favorite main protag: Zidane Tribal

Favorite party members: Fran, Balthier, Lulu, Khimari.

Favorite villain: I'm....not sure. I haven't played FFVI so I can't and won't say Kefka. I haven't played enough FFVII to vote for Sephiroth(I will not give him a vote based on his KH appearences). So...I'm gonna have to vote for Seymour. Even if he's not the main antag. I actually did like Seymour. Also scared the fuck outta me the first time Anima used its super powerful attack on me and drug me under the ground so I could see his lower half.*shudder*

I've only played 1/4 of FFVII, 2/3 of FFVIII, 3/4 of FFIX, and I completed FFX and FFXII. Never played anything earlier than FFVII. Never really had the chance. Being that I haven't had the chance to play Dissidia, I know nothing about Warrior of Light, Firion, Onion Knight, Cecil, Bartz or Terra. Save for their appearance, anyway.

Sahz was, easily, the best character in XIII. That scene in Chapter 8 (when he has Vannile at gunpoint) is one of the few truly emotional scenes in the game.

Well some one smarter than me agrees that means it is fact now right *grin*, best screen name ever by the way.
