Nine.

Seven is most iconic; six is best reviewed, but nine borrows liberally in music, visuals and tone from all aspects of the previous series and pulls it into a compelling, atmospheric whole. It bears the most concentrated Final Fantasy experience, in my opinion: dripping with moogles, chocobos, black mages, summoners, androgynous villains and a main character with what might possibly be the most distinct and sympathetic personality of the series. The end-times PSX-era graphics are old enough to evoke nostalgia, while not being old enough as to be something the modern gamer has to consciously get over.

I consider FFIX one of the objective best of the series; others may argue, but I still figure it to be the best way to get your feet wet (then poisoned, petrified and eaten by Quina).
seriously listen to that guy after nine u could try the rest ff9 shows what a final fantasy game is all about

I disagree, good sir, to me FF 3 is what FF is all about.

I personally started with FFVIII and never got used to the Junction system (used to equip your characters with skills).

Afterwards was FFIX, which by far is my favourite. It has a very accessible story unlike VII, VIII, XII or XIII. There are many memorable and likeable characters, with moogles, chocobos, black mages, old towns and castles, interesting bosses.
Plus some of the best game music from that era. AAAAAND one of the most touching moments in Final Fantasy (JUST behind FF7)

IX all the way!

Sadly, the better Final Fantasy games have the random encounters, so that's out. honestly, FF VI would be the best to start with and ease into the games themselves.

Plus, the game is awesome and the random battles can be finished in a matter of seconds later in the game (And you get a yeti as a teammate).

Personally I started with 8, but for a starter today I'd suggest X.

Okay graphics, nice plot and a pretty great fight system. If you don't have a relationship with the franchise it might be hard to start caring about the sprites from the old games, so start with X and work your way backwards in my opinion.

Just don't try anything after X, since that was currently the last great game in the main series.

This is all personal opinion of course.

While I'm not a huge fan of turn based combat I can deal with it, it's just the random encounters that bug me so if there's a game without those I'd like to play that one.
Based on what you said Final Fantasy XII (12) is the best one for you. Plus being released in 2006 on the PS2 the graphics are still really good. While anything older then the PS2 the graphics will be a eye sore. Finally, it is the only Final Fantasy to get a 5/5 from X-Play on G4TV.

Hope that helps.

-Things that are FF related-
Final Fantasy, or FF1 to those of you who can't figure out titles.

Don't play a remake. Don't degrade yourself to that level! Why do I suggest playing the original, unaltered copy of Final Fantasy?

#1. The difficulty curve will keep you very busy.

#2. The magic system is the magic system. No MP, only spells per day. Makes the game much more challenging and tactical.

#3. Limitations in the day made it so that if you overkilled a monster by having everyone attack it and it died on the first character attakcing, the other three would miss because the monster doesn't exist anymore. Again, breeds thoughtful battle decisions.

#4. You can choose your party from the very start. Yeah, FF3 was cool and you could change classes, but Final Fantasy is the only game you can start with what you want at the very beginning. Build your party and see where it takes you!

If you can beat Final Fantasy, you certainly have the authority to go ahead and finish every other Final Fantasy game. If not, well, you're just another FF7 fanboy...

How about people like me who (regularly) go on a playthrough of what I consider the 'only' FF's (1 through 6)?

Also, where else would I gain my onion knight fix other than FF3...

7, more or less. It's where most people start and it's fairly easy to get your hands on.

Hey now, I love all those games too and if we're talking just pure gameplay wise, FF3 is still my second favorite (FF9 just has way too good a music score, characters and such for it not to be #2 of 'Best FF of all time') and I've played through every single one. I'm just saying, if you have to start somewhere, start with Final Fantasy because it'll determine if you love it or hate it as a serise. That and it's one of those "gamer notches" you can say "yeah, I beat that" to.

Okay, since you are a fresh one, I can save you. Never, EVER, touch Final Fantasy 10, 12, 13 or 8. Don't no matter what anyone says. They are infected. What they speak is not words, but sounds and noises that if you take a bit of their tainted food known as pocky, sound like sentences. Here's a list of the acceptable choices:

Final Fantasy 1
Final Fantasy 2 (only if you're curious, it had a leveling mechanic that made sense, but it got in the way of some things)
Final Fantasy 3 (it's pretty damn hard, but if you're smart you can power through)
Final Fantasy 4-6 (great stories, balanced difficulty, heartbreaking scenes, and beautiful soundtracks)
Final Fantasy 7 (Only if you're curious as to where the series took a dive down the flaming pits of Tartarus)
Final Fantasy Tactics (One of the all time greatest stories ever accomplished in this form of entertainment, A soundtrack that could kick the ass of most games released today, Believeable, relateable characters, Strategic and rewarding gameplay, and a customization system that put's most MMO's to shame, what the hell more do you want)

Quickly, close this thread before they come back!

The more I think about it, the more I realize that you were right to recommend Final Fantasy first. I'd probably play through them in order, and then (as poster above me said) you'd realize where the series went wrong and how.

Just start with any of the final fantasy games that isn't XIII(13), XI(11) or X-2.
I've played first, second, third, fourth, seventh, ninth and twelfth game of the franchise and recommend either the first, third, seventh or ninth.

What determines Final Fantasy as the game that decides the love of the series? It always seemed like one of the less Final Fantasy-esque Final Fantasy games in the series. The story is simple, character personalities don't exist, and there aren't really any over-the-top moments or melodrama like other Final Fantasy games. It seems like FFIV would fit the criteria more than anything.

Honestly curious. Are you talking about the main series only or Final Fantasy in general?

You can't go wrong with FF6.

Unless you don't like random encounters. In which case, play FF6 anyway because it's the best one.

The original was definitely good, but I agree it would be considered pretty difficult by today's standards. The mechanics are, in my humble opinion, easily the best out of the entire series.

I also really enjoyed 3 (and that would be 6 to those using Japan's numbering convention, I believe) and 4. If you aren't up for such an undertaking, though, you could play Mystic Quest. It's certainly not up to par with the other games in the series, but on the plus side it's much less difficult (and from what I recall, much shorter), so you shouldn't have much trouble plowing through it quickly.

Unfortunately I haven't played anything after 8, so I can't say much about those.

NO

I'm sure you're an excellent person with many fine ideas, mister Mopbucket, and this is not one of them. Do not play this game. Never play this game. It does not exist. You are surely hallucinating. SURELY.

If you want a simpler Final Fantasy with mechanics that differ from the menu-centric random-encounter fluffiness typical to the series, look instead at Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and its sequel, for the GBA and DS respectively. Less of a distinct story than some others, but the job-switching mission-centric tactical gameplay is pretty darned enthralling. I'd say just skip to the sequel; there's a mechanic in the first (the Judges) that gets really annoying as the game progresses.
