Definitely second this. Doom got me into PC gaming and I haven't looked back since. That and the music for this level is a gaming legend, in my opinion.

SUPER mario world

There's two choices in that game, which one were you talking about, the right path or the left one?
well right is technically world 1-2 i think, but definitely that one

i called it, the live farming level
There's a better life farming level later in the game called the 'Top Secret Area' if you know what I mean.

Fallout 3, I found the Vault sequence to be enjoyable and interesting. It also introduced the whole moral choice thing and let me kill an old man. Whats not to like. It also made me think that there would be an IMPORTANT story after I left.

God of War 2's first level was pretty good too. I love the Colossus fight.

I like to chisel men sometimes but Dante's office in Devil May Cry 3. Nothing like a game that starts off with an over-the-top awesome cutscene, then hands the reins over the player and says "Now you do it." My only regret: while the jukebox metal was kinda cool, they didn't start the <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsgDC_vcpqM>best standard battle music until level 2.
That was probably the most intense opening cutscene ever.

As for my opinion, i liked the hydra fight in the first god of war.

cod 4 its the only game with a fun tutorial level
your fruit killing skills must be pretty damn remarkable then! ;D

my fastest time was 1:18 through the cargo ship simulator. i played that again and again for 2 hours and i'll NEVER get that close again.

The first levels of the half-life franchise are always interesting, but for me the cake has to go to Halo 3. Being the Master Chief again, running and jumping around blowing the methane tanks off little Grunts after crashing thousands of metres to the Earth and nearly dying filled me with pride.

you havent played many games then have you? it was a good way to get players accustomed to the controls but i wouldnt call it fun and there are quite a few games that have VERY good (aka, as good as the rest of the freaking game) tutorial levels.

anyway, there are a shitload of awesome first levels in games. metroid prime 1 and 3's openings. , re4's, no more heroes. but ive gotta go with the first soviet mission in red alert. all the people of this town are all working for the allies and your told to go in and kill them all. your given troops, tanks, planes and dogs and the only objective is to completly destroy the town and everyone in it. its kinda hard to describe but everyone i know whos played red alert says thats just an awesome level.

I thought the first level of Return to Castle Wolfenstein was pretty good; it wasn't too challenging and the castle looked damn cool.

By the way, can anybody tell me how B.J. Blaskowitz got captured the second time around?

which halo? halo 3 was good-1 was not.
Really? I didn't much care for the first mission in Halo 3. I thought Halo 1 was okay, but nothing special - the corridors were all too similar, I felt like I'd get lost.

I was going to say Goldeneye: storming through the military base capping enemies followed by the dive off the dam was a blast. It might not seem so great to someone playing it for the first time now, I think, but at the time it was amazing.

But then I remembered Alien vs. Predator 2. Now this game isn't one of my favourites, but the first level of the Alien campaign is epic. Alec Meer did a great retrospective on that level [http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/03/12/semi-retrospective-aliens-vs-predator-2/] for Rock Paper Shotgun a while ago:

AVP2 has one great moment that absolutely shames AVP1. It?s the start of the Alien campaign; in AVP1 you begin it a fully-formed Alien warrior, an engine of slashing and headbiting destruction from the off. In AVP2, you begin low to the ground, with nothing to your name except a surprisingly powerful jump and the ability to climb walls. The nearby remnants of an Egg reveal the curious truth. You?re a Facehugger - an iconic monster we have, until now, only gotten to shoot at. What does a Facehugger do? It hugs faces. Then sticks a hideous protuberance down the huggee?s throat and pumps parasitical genetic material into their belly. So that?s what you?ve got to do.

...something is awry.

Huh, must be my imagination. Anyway, yeah. Granted, the game never let you use pool balls as impromptu projectiles, but it was one of the more creative ways I can think to teach players to landsurf on fallen enemies.

Incidentally, does anyone happen to know how to get bloodstains off a chisel? Just asking.

First level of Splinter Cell: CT you get an amazing first cut scene then your ivading an island hearing a man being tortured; your snapping necks and cashing checks.
