I think the opening area of KotOR II is probably the best in any game I've seen. It opens right out with a short-term goal (find out what happened to the station), the beginning of a long-term goal (how did I get involved in all of this, exactly? And who are these people? Why are these Sith attacking us?), two interesting characters, and plenty of opportunities for you to explore and learn how to play the game without feeling crushed under a lot of unfamiliar controls. The events are complex but logical, there's a lot of variety involved, it's just really, really well done.

Pity the game went downhill from there.

I would have to say COD4 and GoW2. COD4, for me, was a real introduction to the next generation of FPS. And God of War, the battle with the Colossus of Rhodes just kinda sets the stage for the rest of the game, as in, you are going to have to kick a lot of ass and some of it will be of colossal size.

And, I will also add Shadow of the Colossus, there is nothing like the first time you see that first colossus and think... I have to fight... that?

BioShock, just for the Light House. Make a rendition of Beyond the Sea and make it entirely instrumental - Win.
I have never got into Bioshock, purely because playing the first level of it in the middle of the night by myself in an empty house caused me to sh*t myself.

Scary much? And yerrr, I know I'm really giving away my gender here.

Resistance 2's Prologue was pretty awesome. You start the level looking at a Chimeran Goliath looking down straight at you, and the entire point of the mission is to bring it down.

God of War just sets the whole awesome factor of the game. Ahh kill, bleed, die hydra

Aww, ninja'd, but I have to admit MoH Frontline was pretty cool

Fallout 3 or Oblivion - not because they're great intro levels, which they are, but because they've got some of the best tutorials/character-building mechanics.

TimeSplitters 2, the sibirian level... it was the first fps (and still my favorite) i had ever played, and me and my brother played co-op and from then on we just kept replaying that very first like 5 min until we both got so good at it that it was like, "i'll that the camera and u get the guard, on 3. 3. 2. 1." pop both went down.... man it brings back such awesome memories, and then the zombies half-way into the level on hard. then that bloody helicopter that just would't die.... nostalgia is amazing. i think i might go and play that now actually.

What is your favorite fist level in a video game and why? It can be for any reason, level design, music, nostalgia or anything else. The only limit is that it must be the first level you visit.

For example: mine is the first level of Megaman Zero 2, because the music that accompanies this level is epic. First it's all sad because your alone, but as soon as your enemeis appear the guitar kicks in and you get an awesome rock peice going for the entire level.
LBP !

It's been offically awarded for having the best First level

Half-Life. It was fun screwing around with all of the scientists, and you can overhear dialogue that foreshadows what is to come. By first level I mean from when the game starts to when things go down the tubes.
