I like the village from Resident Evil 4. It really set the tone for the rest of the game.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts

I'd say about 50% of people I met who remember this game never beat stage 1.

90% never beat stage two.

FF6's opening sequence in Narshe. It was solem, atmoshphericic, and has a creepy vibe.It taught me too stay the hell away from anyone named Biggs or Wedge. Also it has my favorite boss battle theme, the Decisive Battle.

Edit:No more Heros is a runner up for starting off the goffy and over the top style

Aliens vs. Predator 2, The first Marines - mission ... by far. Made me almost pee my pants without a single actual enemy most of the level.

GoW1, the Hydra fight. You fight 5 giant fucking heads of a goddamn Hydra one by one, as well as an army of undead warriors and harpies, jumping from ship to ship as each vessel is rapidly torn apart by said Hydra and their crews slaugthered, before finally impaling the beast through the eye with the mast of a ship!

How is that NOT the most awesome thing ever??!

Grand Theft Auto 1. Because it's the only game that lets you kill shit, right from the start. No half-hour tutorials, or pointless story that just gets in the way of killing stuff.

Probably Mercenaries 1, the begining bit where you reverse ur HumV off a low flying transport plane and then drive to the AN HQ through road blocks and running over a few enemies as well.

Mission: Impossible for the N64 anyone?
Thanks for bringing back memories I'd rather not experience again...urgh...

Mass Effect, COD 4, Saints 2 for it's sheer over-the-top-ness, and the 1st level of Mario 64 (Bom-omb Battlefield I think it was called) just for the music and the scale.

Emerald Hill from Sonic 2 was pretty awesome, the music and familiarity from all the other Sonic games made it hella fun to play.

First post, be gentle. D:

Never found it THAT much of a problem after about 10 mins of getting used to the levels and learning to expect things the game slowly bored me.

Hmm, killer7 had a good first level. It gave a lot of intrigue into the story and was fun but I also think that FF7 had a great opening, it started off calm, showing the night sky and the technical marvel of Midgar and then the drums kick in and you are trust into a bombing mission.
