Ive never played it, but Zeno Clash appears to have gotten the mechanic down very well.
Yes. It's INCREDIBLY satisfying and I highly recommend it. In fact, that's my answer. Zeno Clash, by far, has the best first-person melee combat.

Condemned 2 get's my vote. The constant searching for a better weapon and diffrent combos made the games combat system almost seem like stragety and it worked out in the end.

Riddick get's my second slot because it almost felt and looked liked you actually punched someone and the weapons only added to the fun.

Zeno Clash is brilliant. Not only is it the best first person melee game ever, but it's also one of the best beat em ups period.

Zeno clash and Mount&Blade.

Also Die by the Sword, but only after several weeks of practice.

As far as functionality goes, it's admirable that Valve managed to make melee weapons often preferable to guns in many Left 4 Dead 2 situations. Usually a hard sell. Who actually bothered using the chainsaw in Doom3?

Dark Messiah had good hand-to-hand combat.

If you can handle earlier games, a little title by the name of "Die By The Sword" was rather entertaining as well.

Zeno Clash.
I heard that valve is actually considering recruiting some employees from that company, or buying it all together.

my love of melee combat has soured due to games like gta4 and it's poor melee mechanics , plus most games have guns and guns are fun

I maintain that no game has had a first-person melee combat that wouldn't have been better in 3rd person and will continue to do so until proven otherwise.

As for bad FP melee combat, just take Oblivion...
clearly you've never played the condemned games. nothing more intense then trying to fend back psychopath hobos with just an old pipe, unless you're fending back hobos that look like manniquens
actually i strongly disagree jandau, if done correctly combat in first person can be much more immersive than 3rd person, and it does not make you feel as removed from the action. you just have to find the right games, as it is done poorly in many.
