Definitely Gish, had it gifted from a friend who had an extra copy, and it rekindled my love for platformers!

I get tons of free games from the App Store. Just check through the free section every now and then, some really amazing titles pop up.

Remember Net Yaroze? Yep... they were the best free games ever given on a demo disk with playstation magazines...! Noteworthy was Rocks and Gems, Net Yaroze Soccer (I will never forget all the rip off team names!! It had about 100 teams if my memory served correctly, all with the official line-ups at the time, but all the names had been very slightly changed to avoid copyright... I will always remember Minchester Utd versus Luverpool...! :p) and the one which involved saving babys from shosts... but I can't remember the name! :|

EDIT: Blitter Boy... that was it... It was a shoot em up which only included non traditional weaponry that could only hurt ghosts, but was pretty fun, and very colourful!

Uhhh, the only one I can think of is Katawa Shoujo.

But I don't know if that counts because it is free.
Heh, that's what I was just about to mention. I suppose Portal would count, but I had already bought it by the time Valve released it for free for a short while.

No one mentioned Cave Story? Ah, such a shame that so few have played what I'd have to say is the greatest totally free game on the internet. Yes, attempts have been made to monetize it with newer versions(Cave Story+, 3D, ect.), but the still-free original remains my favorite.

Got Deus Ex 1 for free as part of that Steam Holiday Giveaway. Never had so much fun in my life. Bought Human Revolution a few months later when it was 10 bucks. Also mad fun.

I received Left 4 Dead 2 as a gift on Steam a while back.

I don't think I've EVER had this much fun with a game. Awesome characters like Ellis and Zoey, the whole game is just plain fun, and I tried playing it once while listening to All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. Plus, I found a mod for the concert level that replaces the songs with MLP songs.

'Nuff said.

Oh. My. God. I had totally forgotten about Net Yaroze!

Absolutely loved those games - I remember that Official Playstation magazine disc that came with like 20 free titles to try! Think there was a future/sci-fi shooter that I spent quite a while playing through on that disc - as well as Blitter Boy and Net Yaroze Soccer, of course!

I have to say... as a kid they were great! They had shit graphics, but they were so simple they worked brilliantly. Scraping the bottom of my memory I remember there were 14 on the same disc as the MGS1 demo... this was the most played disc in the history of my PSX!

Yaroze Soccer was soo funny too! All the weird animations, and that all of your players ran at the same speed in formation... it worked well though... the mid way point between fifa games and table football!

There were quite a few maze games too.. probably born out of the obsession of 3D maze games on Windows95 at the time. Remember that screensaver where you watched a computer going thorough random generated mazes, hitting rats and stuff... crazy!

There was one maze game called 'The Incredible Coneman' who had to collect all the cones on the level! He moved so damn slow, and the music was one funky basline playing over and over again... to this day that bassline will randomly fall into my head! :|

I also remember a racing game that took place in a 3D psycodelic tube, and a top down gorey shooter that was also 2 player!

OH! And Terra Incognito (Don't ask how I remember that name! :S) which was the 3d platforming game, that was so disorientating it was practically impossible to play!

That's all the ones I remember...

This Guy on GoG.com gifted me Planescape torment once.
That game was fun, but the best has to be Persona 3 FES from my friend

Mass Effect 2 in EA's "Sequel Celebration." I bought Dragon Age 2 and got ME2 for free. It was actually a pretty good move on their part. I wouldn't have bought 1 or 3 had I not received 2 for free.

Probably this twisted metal rip off for the PS1. I don't really remember the name of it any more but you were able to unlock and alien saucer as a playable character it was a lot of fun.

My favourite game of all time is a game I borrowed from my cousin and he never asked for it back, so I guess I technically got it for free. Final Fantasy VIII!
Although since then I've bought two new copies and then downloaded it off PSN, because it turns out my discs all had leprosy or something, but yeah. The first time was free.

A brand new copy of Forza 4. There was a kinect steering wheel and the game as a bundle, but my friend only wanted the steering wheel, so lucky ol' me scored the game.

I got Portal 2 (traded for Risen) , Counter Strike: Source( traded for Left 4 Dead 2), and Dwarfs?! for free from the steam holiday stuff. That was pretty awesome.
