What does everyone think are some of the best games out there that you don't have to pay for?
I want something to play, but I don't want to pay for anything right now.

I'll start with my favourite free games. Battle for Wesnoth and Rogue Survivor.

Battle for Wesnoth is a turn based strategy game with lots of different campaigns and Rogue Survivor is a zombie rogue-like.

Turbine's F2P MMO's (DDO and LotRO) are good. There's a couple of hours of content available for free. Plus you're going to be earning Turbine points by playing, which can purchase more content without ever having to spend a single cent.

Or, you could just check out Kongragate.

It doesn't seem like it would fit your likes (given your 2 favourites) but World of Tanks is pretty awesome. You don't even need to pay for anything, well there are a handful of premium tanks but I have barely seen people use them. It does take a while to gain experience with some tanks and I'm not sure how the later tiers work (I am trying to max out every tank and I'm halfway through tier 3 now).

It's basically a team deathmatch/capture the base game with tanks and considering there isn't really any other games that have good tank combat it's worth a go.

Blacklight: Retribution, Raiderz, Alien Arena, Tera online, Warframe, Star trek online, Path of Exile, Super monday night combat, Smite, Planetside 2, Tribes: Ascend, Firefall, Ghost recon online, and probably a lot more that I dont remember. That should keep you busy for awhile

Seriously though, I'll just give you my three favorites.
First we've got the current juggernaut of the gaming world, League of Legends, second's a fun A-RPG still in beta with a deep levelling system, Path of Exile, lastly one that I haven't played in a while Wizardry Online, fun and hard if not a little grindy if you get stuck.

TF2 is probably the best free multiplayer shooter on the market. I also like Blacklight Retribution and Hawken.

Blacklight Retribution is horribly unbalanced, but extremely fast paced and fun. Hawken is a really fun as a team game with a few friends.

I'd highly recommend Trackmania. I got a lot of enjoyment out of that before the levels became too hard, or I was unable to get fast enough times to unlock any new tracks.

Metro 2033 was free for a bit, so to me that is the best one.

Warframe / TF2 are all good though.

League of Legends
Not only is it a fun game but the only stuff that isn't free is cosmetic.

Get out while you can.

I found it an idiotically frustrating slog past tier 5.

Honestly, the most fun I got out of the game were the earliest tiers.

Endgame: Singularity is a fun free (and open source) strategy game. Not much in the way of graphics, but it's got a focus on stealth and research if you like that.

Haha I'm loving it still, I think I've gotten close to 100 hours on it already, only bad thing is I keep getting distracted from games I need to catch up on haha

The other problem is the South East Asia servers aren't the biggest so I get pretty annoyed at always having my tier 3s go up against tier 5s. Seriously, fuck the KV-1. I can never damage the damn things :/

I just shake my head every time I have to explain how that works to f2pers on LotRO, and then they basically go, "Wah, nooo, but that means I have to grind for hours, and that is stupid, the system is stupid."

Of course, I tell them that nothing is truly free, money-wise it is, but they have to put in the play time, the "FREE" play time. But then they go on pouting.

Edit: Forgot to add: Yes I recommend LotRO. Now, I'm not f2p player anymore(have been playing the game for over three years), as the game greatly grew on me and I'm a fan of The Lord of the Rings so, I ended up going with a three month sub for 30USD. But technically, it is 15 for the three months and an extra 15 for the 500 turbine points they give me each month for subbing.

Dota 2. It's insanely fun and can give hell loads of fun if you have people to play with. There's a reason it's my most played game on Steam.

TF2, Planetside 2, and Warframe are all good multiplayer suggestions that should be a veritable time sink for a while. I personally come back to TF2, as it's got heart of its own, something I feel the others lack.

Realm of the Mad God is my second favorite out of the free multiplayer games. Think an isometric pseudo bullet hell game that emphasizes cooperation and this is it.

And now a single player suggestion as I'm not sure the OP wants be multiplayer only: Cave Story. The freeware version is still up, and is a recommended start. It's quite an interesting platformer which I'll not spoil. Trust me, you want to go in blind. ;-)

Another one for LOTRO here. I've played the game for over three years and haven't paid anything since it went F2P apart from the expansions, which I could've bought with my free turbine points had I wanted to.
Amazing game that lasts a really long time. On the downside the expansions has gotten worse and worse in my opinion. Last one put me off from playing all togeather. Have tried returning a few times, but I just can't be arsed anymore.

Still, it'll give you hundreds of hours of fun if you find it to be your type of game.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Mechwarrior Online yet. It's in Open Beta - anyone can download and give it a try. It's quite simple - each match is only 5-6 minutes - great to drop in, lose yourself for a bit, and then drop out.
