Every time i get a new game i go through a cycle:
1A.Pick a game from DB based on genera, tags, age. the DB needs to be user editable.
1B. Pick a game from "wanted" list or recommendation/rating.
2.Watch a few game-play videos and reviews mostly to avoid surprises.
3.Get the game.
4.Find the wiki/faq/walk-through for the game mechanics and manual.
5.Find the fan-sites to get the best mods.
--play--
6.rate and review.

What sites will help me do these things? Several sites may be used together but the fewer the better. Most collection managers have a weak DB built in. #3 is probably a separate site altogether. I mean google products. Sites with only a unique recommendation system are also interesting. Which DB & CM are the best?

I use tvtropes, listal, mobygames and occasionally moddb, sourceforge wikipedia and giant bomb.

*Cricket cricket* Have you tried Gog.com? At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, they've got some really old games that old-school gamers like me really enjoy. I'd recommend it highly. They've got a wide database with user reviews and recommendations, DRM-free games, and it fills out *most* of the criteria on you list.

GameFaqs.com is the closest thing to what you've described. But, from what I see, what you have described doesn't exist.

GameFaqs.com i'm pretty sure that only has faqs/guides. I use at this site at #4 but i am looking for a site that links to the good guides of Faqs and others.
Gog is #3 and #1 (list, genera, similar) but i don't see the rest.
I guess #4&5 can be done with just a forum directly liking to the entry but what sites actually do this?

Crap, if you would have asked me a few years back I might have known.

I used to use this PS2 Database that you could add what games you had and it'd have all the info (even cover at and manual stuff).
