If you ask someone what the best videogame ever created is there will be varying opinions you will probably hear things like Ocarina of Time, Halo or if they are a veteran gamer some obscure title that sold a handful of cartridges before the company went bust.

I think though that people overlook one of the greatest videogame of all time simply because it's so simple and if you've played it you have to give it the respect it deserves.

Here's why:

-It's simple and easy to play, and anyone new to the game can pick up and play it in a second.

-It's a legendary game but there isn't many fanboys for it.

-It doesn't need ridiculously detailed graphics.

-There's no story, setting or character's but it still manages to be a rich experience when played.

-There's no casual or hardcore with this game.

The only downside to it is it's so famous it's been tacked onto every cheap "1500+ games in one" compilation game in history which damages it's reputation.

The game is of course Pong, if there was a definitive greatest it would be this game, Pong is always fun and it really has no flaws in terms of gameplay.

I challenge you to prove me wrong.

Pong doesn't have a very long lifespan surely. It's fun for a while but I think being repetitive is an issue. You have some good points though.

Yeah, Tetris meets all those criteria you put forward for Pong, except perhaps the casual/hardcore thing, but that just means it has more depth to it, so it won't get boring as quickly. If ever.

How could you say Tetris is better than Pong, Tetris is certainly great but does it meet all the points listed above, nope.

Get 3 friends together, sit down, and try:

M.U.L.E.

It's old school, but it's seriously fun with a group. And you'll want to strangle each other.

The only criterion upon which it fails is 'Has no fanboys' (as evidenced in the above posts), though that's hardly a criticism.

I would say the first Metal Gear Solid, as it blended an innovative stealth-based gameplay with a beautiful and emotional storyline, not to mention all the challenging and unique boss battles along the way, and one of my favorite sidekicks of all time, Otacon.

So by your logic a single simple grape is better than any wine ever made out there?

I don't get it.
Using your analogy the wines are varied and complex they always have good points but they always have flaws and not everyone will like the taste.

Everybody loves a grape though because they are simple and they will always have such a great taste.

Look at the Wii ping pong game, basically it's a glorified version of Pong which is why it's so popular.

Kinda agreed, it combines pretty much every element needed for a great modern game very well. But I fucking hate Otacon!

I had to chuckle at this. Well said sir.

Simplicity does not make the greatest game.

Personally I think the question (That is, which is the greatest game ever?) is unanswerable. BUT, if I was following your criteria, I would agree with most others on this thread that Tetris is the way to go. Not only is it also easy to pick up and master, but it gets harder as you play (So you can be consistently challenged), it's different every time (In terms of sequence of brick drops), and the music kicks ass.

What else can you say?

I thought everyone like Pong, didn't everyone wile away hours on the school computers playing pong type flash games when they were supposed to be working?

Your lack of faith in Pong is disturbing.
