Aha! I can best your effort OP.

Commander Keen 4.

Here's why:

-It's also simple and easy to play, seven year old can pick up and play it in a second.

-I have yet to meet a Commander Keen fanboy.

-It also doesn't need ridiculously detailed graphics.

-The story takes a back seat to the gameplay, as far as I can remeber the story is just "rescue some old dudes."

-It has pong in it.

Pong gets repetitive in about five minutes. It also doesn't make me feel anything, it's just an incredibly bland experience.

@Carl

Nope, as far as I can remember there hasn't been another thread yet challenging people to debunk the theory Pong is the best game ever.

It depends on the type of game experience you're looking for. I would put Planescape: Torment at the helm of Best Game Evar! probably followed by Arcanum despite the fact that they both suck as a game. They're not balanced in terms of character choices and they get exhausted out through multiple plays. What they do do is offer an engaging story and setting as well as intriguing choices.

Tetris and other games of its ilk don't offer you new experiences when you play. They just give you a set of rules and wait until you fail, then repeat with a new game. That would be my chief complaint with them. Multiplayer of almost every game is similar in the execution of these simpler games but the human element adds much more unpredictability.

But in terms of a repetitive yet engaging simple game, I'd probably vouch for the board game Puerto Rico being my favorite. There's so little randomness about it, yet it manages to play out uniquely every time.

My God.

Could this be the first official... Pong fanboy?
lol, I wouldn't say I'm a Pong fanboy, atm I'm playing modern titles like Fallout 3 but I always feel games like Pong that are simple and fun will always be timeless.

My pick doesn't fit the criteria 100%, but I can sit down and play Tropico for HOURS...no matter how many times I play it, it never gets old, therefore, I'd call it one of the greatest games ever created.

well from a design stand point both Pong and Tetris are flawless. It really comes down to prefrence to decide which one is better. For me, Tetris.

EDIT: Plus Tetris came with some of the most reconizable sounds and music ever put in a video game, only other game that probably tops it is Mario.

I don't think there's much point in saying that there's a "Best Game Evaar", mainly because there are jst to many brilliant games. Also, just as Yahtzee said, the potential for great games only gets better as our technology increases. But if I had to pick one, I'd probably have to go for GTA IV or Saint's Row 2 at the mo. Absloute mindless brilliance, Huzzah!

Spacewar! Seriously, it's got depth way beyond that of Pong, which wasn't even Nolan Bushnell's first game.
Isn't Spacewar, 'technically' the first video game created as well?

I hate pong. Seriously. Bores the crap out of me. Not a great fan of pinball either (Although Sonic Pinball was pretty fun).

Tetris is fun. Better music than pong too. Best game ever? Perhaps not. It's impossible to name the Best Game Ever and frankly a tad pointless trying.

Actually Yahtzee said he considers Portal the best game ever.
And yet still no one cares...

Is there something about Portal I'm not getting? I've seen hundreds of people declare it the best game ever, when all I see is a 3 hour long marathon of ridiculously easy puzzles topped with humor that (mostly) has no subtlety about it at all.
At least the player-made maps make it a little more worthwhile (even if most of them are stupidly complicated and can only be beaten if you try them over and over again for six hours).

The Syphon Filter series. Syphon Filter had amazing gameplay, story, characters, character developement, level design, and if you beat all three without cheating, you deserve some kudos. Plus it had one of the greatest soundtracks ever.

Yes, but Omega Strain turned Logan into a whiny *****, Dark Mirror's gameplay just wasn't the good ol' Syphon Filter I know and love, and I never got to play Logan's Shadow so I can't judge that one. I guess there are four.
