Best game ever?

Ok that evpression gets thrown around alot, which got me thinking...what Actually is the best game ever?
For me it would have to be the original X-com.

What do you think it is?

I'm going to say San Andreas because everyone who played the game has fond memories of it. I have never met anyone who didn't have fun playing the game. Sure, there were some complaints. It played more like GTA-RPG but it was still the pinnacle of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.

Vice City was highly acclaimed when it came out, and in turn got people more excited when San Andreas came out. It was big, bold, and completely unlike any other GTA game. It was truly a rags to riches story unlike the other GTA games which were simply mindless errand running. In San Andreas, you felt progression. You carried out simple gang tasks in the beginning like tagging turf and meeting people, doing drive bys...etc...and 100 missions later you're flying jets, parachuting into the Hollywood hills, driving through LA during the 1992 riots, and breaking into a building with a swat tank ending with a chase with a crooked cop.

And it was still GTA. The crazy police chases. Riding a bmx bike across the desert in nothing but your underwear with helicopters after you. Mowing down pedestrians with mini guns. Driving RC cars to blow up vans. Going off jumps. Flying planes.

It is a game I will make my kids play to see what an iconic game really is.

In my opinion the best game ever is probably Quake lll Arena my top 5 being:
1. Quake lll
2. UT2003
3. Red dead redemption
4. Fallout 3
5. CoD4 (before all this ACOG shit)

Rome: Total War, and it's held that spot in my rankings for damn near six solid years now. Took the spot over from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which had held the spot since 2001 when I created the very first version of my ranked list in a GameFAQs thread and which has been a constant fixture (in text file form) on all my hard drives since then for whenever a "best games ever" thread comes up on a message board anywhere on the Internet.

There really is no way of saying what is the best one.
You could define it by the majority of voters, sure, but it still wouldn't be the "best" for everyone.

Personally, I find the best game ever to be Warcraft III. God bless Blizzard and World Editor for this wonderful game that allows you to make any game possible, using the Warcraft III platform. Opens up all kinds of game styles, from arcade, shooters, roleplay and RTS, etc...

Counter-Strike 1.6
Dues-Ex
Unreal Tournement
Quake
AvP

Dues-Ex is probably the "best" of my bunch, but one of my most memorable gaming moments was playing AvP. The first time I started the marine campaign, in the dark, with headfones on. Click, click, click, whistle, whistle. What the fuck is that. Whistle. Holy SHIIIIIITTTTT

Needles to say, i forgot my training and didnt use controled bursts.

Makes me smile to this day, I'll never forget that adrenalin rush. Sad, maybe, but I loved it.
