I agree that FF8 had a kick ass opening, you don't see many openings like that anymore. Most are over-the-top or just getting straight to a point. I did, however, like the opening missions to Saint's Row 2 like when you were in the bar and smashing the guy's face with a liquor bottle. After watching that and hearing the dialog i thought to myself "This is going to be one hell of a fun game". And It was. =p My character was a bit more mafia-style but this video works:

Another videogame opening i liked was the Warhammer MMO CG intro where it kinda showed one of each race/class thing fighting amongst themselves and when the mage came out freezing stuff it made the hairs on my neck stand up. I'm a really big fan of mages, especially when it comes to ice. I never really played the MMO but that video made me want to. I couldnt find that video last time I looked for it they had some new video when you start up the game.

Looking back now I quite like the Opening of Mass Effect 1, The way it starts with the music, and the VO of them describing comander shepard, it imedietly gives you a feeling like youre at the begining of somthing huge and epic

The one I remember the best is the opening to KotOR it did a good job of setting the pace and teaching at the same time but was memorable. As for most exciting into I would have to pick the one from L4D it led into the first level and ended in "Son we just crossed the street."

In my opinion, Nothing can beat the opening to Indigo Prophecy. Just the way Lucas Kane is introduced to the game, and the fact that he was shrouded in mystery and didnt know what was happening to him was astounding. And the way the murder scene set the story up was great.
