Because, well it's DOOM.
I know right? Without DOOM no other shooter would really be the same. Almost every game can relate back to DOOM.
Also, because it's still very playable and fun.

Whats the best game series to you and why?

PLEASE DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE ON THEIR DECISIONS
Honestly? Probably Fallout 1,2 and 3. (And for those who remember it, Wasteland.)

It took post-apocalyptic Earth and created a world that I totally could lose myself in, and it created something *new* and uniquely "Fallout" - anyone remember the Scientology spoofs from... Fallout 2 was it, at the end of the game? Or how you could get married and pimp out your wife?

Or in Fallout 3 how you could basically choose up front if you wanted to go "good" or "evil" and even choose a location fitting your character's actions as a "home base" - Megaton or that evil dude who wanted to blow up Megaton so he could have a clearer view of the skyline, etc.

I also love Bioware games; Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2 (and Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2) were amazing; but I hesitate to call either a "series" since they're just sequels thus far.

Anyway, those are my votes. Oblivion TES series I would have added for storytelling and non-linear nature alone in Oblivion but man, I hated the leveling system which encouraged me to sit and repeatedly mash buttons for my low level spells just to get the attributes I wanted raised with each level... argh, that was the worst, worst, worst leveling system ever.

"Want to raise your endurance? Stand around and let giant rats hit you!"

Etc.

I would honestly have to say either Mass Effect or the Sims.

Mass Effect for obvious reasons, good sci fi rpg action

The Sims, been on board since the first one and always look forward to a new expansion or update, yeah I suck I know :p

Metal Gear the journey it has taken from 8 bit days to the present MGS4 is stunning. The plot is mind bogglingly complex and although frequent retcons appear there are few plot-holes created as a result. And the game-play for me has always been rewarding, especially in MGS3.

If I'm allowed to just say the Sands of Time trilogy from the Prince of Persia series then that takes the prize, and if not I'm going to have to go with the Legend of Zelda series. Almost every single Zelda game is really solid, and while the locales/items have seen a bit of recycling over the years, each game still manages to seem fresh and interesting.

Quit being a douche all the OP asked for was an opinion not an insult.
*yawn*
If you're going to call people names, at least be creative about it.
... So, you're insulting him because his insults weren't good enough? Tell me this is sarcasm.

"Whats the best game series to you and why?

PLEASE DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE ON THEIR DECISIONS" ~OP

So someone genuinely asks for your opinion on a subject and you tell them that by asking for your opinion that to answer their question would be "narrow-minded and trollish", thereby not only insulting the OP, but in one fell swoop you also manage to insult everyone who replies or everyone who does hold a series close to heart(btw you're post is the epitome of trollish), and yet I'm the prick? Y'know what I am a prick, but for the reasons you mentioned? Not so much. For being relentless misogynistic player? Very much so, but at least I know that.

Also, your age shows through your typing, I'm guessing you're either 14-18 or just enjoy cyber bullying (aka trolling) because its the only outlet you have that makes you feel like you have some small increment of meaningless power. In either case some maturity is needed.

Nows the part where you make several claims to dispute me, none of which I'll believe and you'll make a comment about the irony that I call you immature when I used a slang term such as douche. Fact is I am immature but I'm also in college where I have 4 years to be immature.

I'll even admit that I hope you are just trying to bait me into a response. To be honest if you are you're quite good at it. I'd even go as far as to call you a master. Yup, a master baiter, thats definitely you.

On Topic: Final Fantasy is also another one of my fave game series but only 1-10

Legacy of Kain series. The games themselves aren't the best in the universe, I'll freely admit to that, but the voice acting, dialogue are beyond perfect and a lot of other series just WISH they had such a complex storyline.
Ah LoK...who knew what greatness lay ahead when the first one was released all those years ago...

I'm inclined to agree, but since there are so many GREAT series...I'll have to just agree that its undoubtedly one of the best instead.

Inarguably GTA. No other game series comes close to the cultural depth. I can't think of any other realistic contendor. Shallow kids games (mario, zelda, pokemon) don't count as they are a dime a dozen and not indicative of the quality and production values a videogame can aspire to. Half-life has only had 2 releases and linear fps are not anything special. What other series with as many releases has been as high quality? There's nothing. But you'll all disagree and just list your favourite game series instead.

There's still nothing else out there like the GTA games, other than maybe RDR & LA Noire. All other openworld/city/sandbox games are mindless fun and don't have the attention to detail or depth GTA has. Infamous, prototype, etc. they don't have radio stations, they have hardly any characters, they have simplistic plots and missions and focus more on mindless gameplay. Nothing comes close to GTA in characters, writing or setting. The whole series is a great social commentary relic of american culture in the past 100 years. Different eras and different cities represented in the music, the fashion, the ethnic groups, the cars, architecture, and tone etc. People don't appreciate enough how much more work and detail is put into GTA than any other game series.
It's amazing how confident people get when they state their opinions as fact.

Metal Gear Solid. I've immensely enjoyed every game released. And yea MGS2 too. Close second I'd say Final Fantasy and Elder Scrolls. I can always count those games will give me my RPG fix.

Agree, MG/MGS ftw
This. The Metal Gear Solid series is just great, lots of fun. Yes, I'm aware that the plot for most of the series is bat shit crazy, but it was never trying to be serious to begin with. What people don't realize is that Koijima is known for putting jokes in his game and being totally absurd, Metal Gear Peacewalker was, in itself, a joke since it was one of his biggest games content wise on one of the smallest platforms.

Not only that, but the MGS series has massive re playability, in my opinion at least. Pretty sure I've finished MGS 2, 3 and 4 more times than I can count.

That and Half life, can't forget Half Life. Oh an Max Payne.

Half-life. Best stories, pacing, level design, gameplay etc. Also my favourite characters outside of an RPG. I still think one of my all-time favourite gaming experiences was battling the marines in Half-life and trying to lose no health whilst doing it.
