This is a challenge. I like creating threads that cause mass controversy and anger among the commuinity >:D make people think :p.

My choice is Chrono Cross. Played Trigger but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE MUSIC IN CRONO CROSS. I have never played a game were I'd actualy sit there just to listen to the ingame music.

I've only ever played FFX, so I can't say it's better than anything else, but I absolutely loved it. It was a ridiculous pain in the arse at times which was actually a rather welcome change to all the joke challenges a lot of games seem to employ today.

But really, it had an interesting story, wonderful characters whom I became quite attached to and a lot of room for exploration. Not to mention the environments were beautiful for their time; Macalania Woods is probably one of my favorite locations in any video game, ever.

Chrono Cross is squaresoft lol

Square enix's best game is easily Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria outside that nothing to me has really stood out.

If we are counting squaresoft then there is alot to choose from and imo no clear winner but Chrono trigger, FF4-11 and some other stuff.

If Squaresoft counts, then Chrono Trigger.
If Square Enix only, then Final Fantasy Tactics.

Going with Kingdom Hearts on this one. Fantastic gameplay, engaging story, sympathetic characters. The second one was also pretty good, but not as good.

I think that all Square should count and I'll say:

1. FFVII (cliche pick but I don't care its a great game)
2. Chrono Trigger
3. FF (if you know the story of how the game was created and how it saved square its existence is a little bit more impressive)

Final Fantasy X-2!

Kidding, of course. I thought X was under the "Stupid good" set. I hated the temples though.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

I absolutely loved that game back in the day. I put more hours into it than any other JRPG.

Final Fantasy IX. Great story, awesome character development and music on a godly level.

I'd totally say Chrono Trigger, because that game is f*ing perfect, but I love Secret of Mana 2 (SNES) way too much.
Other than those, several of my favorites would have to be all the even numbered Final Fantasy games (except 14), Tactics and sequels, most of the Crystal Chronicles games, and Kingdom Hearts as a series.

Also, I'm a Square fanboy, so anything I say can basically be ignored.

Final Fantasy VI.
The only game to ever make me cry.
Also, the battles required a lot of active input, rather than issuing single commands and waiting for the ATB bar to fill back up.

Enix made Mischief Makers. Does that count?

If not, The World Ends With You, no contest.

The Last Remnant (the very much enhanced PC version), the core mechanics are innovative, I love the random commands from the battle system that stop being combat as formulaic as Knights of the Round followed by Mimic or summon Eden and spam Square...

You weigh up your options and take risks and replacing the leveling up system with the leveling up your stats AND abilities as you use them and giving you a "battle rank" based solely on how you perform against enemies and tuning their AI and moveset accordingly.

Second I'd have to say Vagrant Story but I can't really say why.

Third I'd have to say Final Fantasy VII, yes it's overhyped, it's the best of the PS1+ era but it's not that great but it is a very extensive, yet flawed (hello translation, spelling errors and Magic Defense being ignored!) game.

Parasite Eve is one of my more favorite games. (Haven't played PEII yet because Square doesn't know when the fuck Spring is.) It is coming to NA soon though ^.^
I'm only part way through FFVI now, but it is really good as well.

If subsidary companies count, the Hitman games by IO hands down.

I haven't been able to find a Squeenix game to date that I can call "Original and Good".
(Don't bother providing the Kingdom Hearts series as an example; I lost the will to play that series after 2.)

Squaresoft, however made INCREDIBLE games throughout the 90s (and into 2000).
Among my favorites...

FF6, both Chrono games, Secret of Mana and Legend of Mana.
Oh, and Secret of Evermore too, though it feels rather incomplete to me even today.
