Not sure Half-Life would qualify as best story/plot. It's masterfully "told" and experienced by the player, but the actual story is cliche upon cliche: scientific-experiment-gone-wrong-government-sends-soldiers-to-cover-it-up/kill-everybody. You had never played this story like that before, but it WAS the same old story of a hundred previous movies, novels and games.

HL2 is better. Personally, I really like when a game (or whatever) takes a familiar universe and turns it upside down, old enemies become friends, etc. The story was maybe too abstract, but things like the newspaper clipings made it more inmersive.

Hmm, I do love FFVIII, but does it technically have a good plot? I know it's told pretty well and maybe that's enough... And the development story of Squall is probably the best one of all the characters in the series, no matter how much he is hated (for some reason) nowdays.

Far Cry had a good story, Liked how xbox story was completely different to the PC.
This needs to be more common.

Considering my position as a skeptical conspiracy buff, MGS as a series has a fairly poor story overall. MGS3, on the other hand, was EXCELLENT since the story directly affected things happening to the characters rather than saying "Oh yeah, and this happened too" or "lol cheap twist", though I would prefer more backstory on each member of the Cobra unit and why they are able to throw their voice so well with their last breaths.

KOTOR is the game equivalent of Empire Strikes Back in terms of twist, execution, and all around awesomeness, AND being followed up by something good but disappointing in the former's shadow.

Earthbound (Mother 2) is a lot like the boat ride in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, in that it starts off cute, quirky, and apparently innocent but gradually becomes more trippy and dark as it progresses and pulled off the whole subconscious mind journey thing before Psychonauts. Also Giygas quotes a rape scene from some movie to GREAT effect, "...it hurts,...it hurts..." "I feel... g... o... o... d...". Also also I think Pokey looks pretty snazzy in a suit

I've heard about FFVI, FFVII, FFIX, FFX, and FFXII. Personally, FFVIII was the first Final Fantasy game that I ever played, so it has a special place in my heart. I can't see past that for some reason, so I wouldn't mind someone else's opinion on the game.

Chrono Trigger. I may have every cliche in the book, but still pulled off an awesome story, character cast, and kick ass, yet simple game play that excused it's clicheness. Hence why it's "the best game of all time" :)

Fallout.
The curse of monkey island.
Starcraft.
Bloodlines. And it's pretty unknown prequel, which was awesome as well.
Deus ex.
Jedi knight: Dark forces 2.
Diablo, the first one. It just sucked you in.
Morrowind gets a mention for depth, even if the storytelling wasn't the greatest. Sure the stories were all great, but the way they were presented wasn't.

FF7 can go to Hell, I'm tired of everyone shitting bricks on how amazing the story is. Such whiney, boring characters that I never grew attached to, with the exception of Biggs and Wedge but only because of the Star Wars reference.
I agree, it's kinda overrated. I didn't find it bad but it certainly doesn't belong in any "best story" forums.

I really loved the plot of Suikoden 5, though it's a bit of a test to get to the good bits, 8 hours of slow character development and then 60+ hours of basically non-stop warfare, action and intrigue made all the more meaningful because you took the time to get to know the characters before hand.
