It depends on what sort of genres you enjoy. There are the classics such as FF7 but like with literature, preference is subjective.

Personally, I enjoy WRPGs. You can create your own path rather than play what is essentially a visual novel. I do like some of the linear games, but I tend to stick to a game where my experience can be altered.

Bioshock and Mass Effect both had me on the edge of my seat until the end on my first playthroughs of them

I would have to go with almost any FF game. The stories are always so huge and epic it is almost like playing a novel. I also think that almost any of the story lines could be turned into really great movies as long as Uwe Boll doesn't direct them.

I second that (not the Uwe Boll part as Ive made too many enemies already).

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.
Sometimes, I feel like a whore for this game. But I'm on my 5th run through, and I'm still discovering stuff. Story-related stuff. Ya. It is amazing.

I may catch some flak for this, but taking in all the books, comics, and whatnot, the Halo series has always kept my attention far more then any other game.

Advent Children and Spirits Within both sucked and none of them were directed by Uwe Boll. And condensing an entire Final Fantasy game into one movie would cut out too much. For one Final Fantasy game it would be like 5 movies (when you cut out most of the needless walking).

Actually, I would pay the $11.50 ticket prices to see Final Fantasy VI broken up into multiple movies. Hell pretty much any movie of a Final Fantasy with a story in it I would pay to see (Final Fantasy 2 and up).
I meant any based on the game's story, so I wasn't referring to Advent or Spirits. And I think they could do it in one movie, but it would have to at least be the lenght of any of the LotR movies. Thoough you do have a point on the lengths of the stories.

I love the story of all FF games from I through X. They all have very deep, intricate plots and the character depths are amazing.

Lost Odyssey also kept me quite engrossed in the story until the very end, so I'd name that as second.

Third goes to Mass Effect.

*Flings +10 Flack of 'Too Obviousness'*

While I'll agree the game stories are pretty good in Halo, I feel anything based off an FPS is a little light on the story, no matter how good it is. I mean you can only really work in so much story between bullets. After all, look at the DOOM[sup]TM[/sup] Movie.

I second the FF statement. FF6 turned into a multi part movie and DONE WELL would be as epic as lord of the rings. Theres more emotion and character depth in that 30+ hours of gameplay than there is in most of today's movies. I would rather see FF7 as maybe a short anime series spanning maybe 15-50 episodes, seems more fitting for me. Also for some reason, as i am replaying FF2, I would think it would be a wondrous movie, there's something about the story that is simplistic and yet complex.

I have to go with Half-Life as my favorite. Much of it's backstory isn't obvious at the start as they don't spoon feed you everything like 99% of every other game out there does, but once you pick up elements of the story and pay attention to the character interactions and dialog, there's one hell of a cool sci-fi story there. Plus, the lack of any cut-scenes and the like makes the story feel much more immersing.

Very close runner-ups would include:
Homeworld
Bioshock
Psychonauts
Almost anything Battletech related.
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Halo 1 only

MGS - For a guy that has been making shit up a long the way, Atleast he could end the game. Unlike bungie.

/Ends poke again bungie

Anything deus ex...Really go play it and invisible wars right now! Eidos=God in a puny form.

Also KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2...But then I would feel like i'm stroking the inner fanboy too much.

While some FPSs can pull of a good story (HL2 springs immediately to mind), and RPGs are usually good for stories, the best plots in games usually come from adventure games, now sadly in the decline. In terms of storyline, I would take an oldie like 'The Longest Journey' or one of the Lucasarts classics (like 'Full Throttle' or 'The Dig' or the Monkey Island games) over 99% of what's made today. I tend not to care if a game is visually impressive or built on a more powerful engine if the story doesn't work.
