Best ending has to go to either Mass Effect or Halo 3 (with Legendary Ending), and for plot twist Bioshock and Second Sight

Halo 3's ending (Legendary) is just absolute milk. "Let's leave the ending open to future sequels" isn't really a GOOD ending or a twist. Just a way of saying that your favorite hero is still going around and will be further exploited in future.
Assasin's Creed (now that we're at it) is one of those twists that's just plain weird. "Oh yeah, you're in a lab"... so... WTH?
There are plenty of games I've yet to play (Like KOTOR, and the whole Shock games), but there are very few games with a non-predictable storyline these days. Kind of like Hollywood.

Strange noone mentioned the Silent Hill series.
Yeah, shame on me; I'm usually the first person to profess my undying love for Silent Hill 2.

**

The part where you play the tape in the room and learn the truth about your wife. I have never turned on a character like that in any game.

I thought Mass Effect had a pretty good twist. I won't say what, because people get cranky when you spoil things, but it involves who the enemy turns out to be and what the Conduit really is. *conspiratorial wink*

Best twist: Someone's death in Final Fantasy VII.

Best ending: hmm... I'd have to say Prince of Persia The Sands of Time. It's realistic, except for the Sands of course. But her reaction stands out among all the other female love interests who immediatly fall in love with the protagonist.

Fallout

You have slain the Lieutenant, blown the cathedral up, and replaced the water chip. You expect a hero's welcome. The overseer then exiles you from the vault.

through the fire and flames really caught me by surprise in gh3. i mean, wow, what an ending. best story in any video game.

then again the shark being the bad guy in Freddy Fish was unexpected too.

Bioshock was also good.

The best video game twist for me is a tie between Golden Sun and Bioshock. In one you find that you were fighting for the completely wrong side the entire first game; in the other you find out that you are really the genetically altered son of the main villan, being controlled by a power hungry mobster.

Best ending is a tie between Mass Effect and Halo 3 for me, both left me satisfied, and with a truly accomplished feeling in my mind.

Thief: The Dark Project, the Trickster cutscene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AAzkPkiImo

Now that's how you do a plot twist. It was fairly obvious something was twisted with Constantine, but not that twisted. And the sheer style... oh man, watching that for the first time. Blew. My. Mind. and practically single handed got me addicted to gaming. After an experience like the first Thief game delivers, I had to seek out more games to see if any came close. Few do, if any, but there's plenty of amazing games out there regardless and I've never looked back.

Ending? I've always been fond of Starcrafts ending, with Tassadars triumphant suicide attack on the otherwise invincible Overmind. Other than that there's the fun Vampire: Bloodlines ending where if you make the wrong allies... lets just say it's not a happy ending. Very cool though and certainly appropriate.

I doubt many people have played or finished it, but my best experience in finishing a game was in Die By The Sword. This game is difficult. Tricks are thrown at the player which would make you think you're fighting shodan (if you saw a single terminal... but this is a medieval/fantasy game). Then when you've finally finished and had your share of being kraken food, devious puzzles and other worse situations that I won't spoil here, you're finally done, you've saved your two-swords-wielding girlfriend and you'll start to tell her all the things you had to do to save her. Fantastic.
Also had one of the best/funniest tutorials I've played. The joys of good writing + voice acting.

When I played system shock 2, I had no idea who Shodan was. But that twist was so well executed that it had me falling from my chair.... and I wasn't laughing.

Bioshock's twist was ridiculously predictable.

Maybe a weird thought though, the ending to skate.

I loved it, 'yeah, im the worlds greatest skater. So what?'.

Sweet.
