Nexus: The Jupiter Incident had really awesome shield and thruster effects. This game has really aged well.
If it wasn't for the HUD I would believe that
was from a cutscene!
Good call on the choice of pic; I added some screens on my first post as well. :)

Revitalizing trees in The Void. When seen in motion, it's fascinating.

Nice to see Ice Pick getting some love!

Alone in the dark did fire pretty well. That game is actually under-rated, and vastly superior to the generic and shallow Alan Wake.

Uncharted has good animations for running etc. Makes FFXIII look like such a last gen game with the same single step animations repeated infinitely.

I thought Final Fantasy 13 was utterly shit in almost every regard, but I have to say the graphics were absolutely fantastic.
You didn't read the OP did you? ¬_¬ "This is not a question about what game has the best graphics." And FFXIII's graphics are not good outside of cutscenes and character models. If you compare Gran Pulse to far cry 2, red dead redemption or even just cause 2, it's laughably low polygon, low texture, low detail & sterile. The battle graphics are horrible, the spell animations are just copy pasted from last gen. Only thing I can think of that looks high quality in-game engine is the faces and water, but every game nowadays has good water and compared to heavy rain and la noire the faces aren't so great.

I was really quite impressed with the explosions in Halo Reach. They look very pretty.

I also definitely agree with the people in here who have talked about Uncharted 2's water and lighting effects, they look very natural and really make every part of the game pop and look fantastic.

I also need to add Red Dead Redemption's skybox. It was just beautiful.

Oblivion, Foliage.
Remeber when you walked out and saw the beautiful expanse of greenery?
I mean, it looks meh when you get up close to it but for an open world game it was easily one of the best worlds environments I've seen.

crysis 2 has some amazing visuals, the lighting, water, focus blurring and particle effects were all pretty sweet

The interrogation scene in The Witcher 2 had really nice lighting, especially when the door opened and you saw the highlights on the characters. Shattered Horizon had amazing lighting effects as well, it's just a shame no one plays it anymore.

Bioshock water was amazing.
You aren't the first to say that, I might have to get it again (for the PC this time), to see this water. I have to admit, while I saw no fault with the water, I can't remember it being amazing, but that is likely down to my memory more than anything.

What's great about it is that it genuinely feels like water, rather than just a film of blueish color over an ocean area. The liquid physics aren't amazing; it's more about the feel.

Two of the hardest things to do in a game are water and long hair. If you can create realistic water flow, and long hair that moves naturally (not like Heavenly Sword) you can do pretty well with graphics

That bit where you see the Big Daddy outside, it actually looks as though it is walking through water, not just very thick air.

In Lost Odyssey, everyone's hair just looks greasy. I'm not sure if it's supposed to, but that's the one thing I took away from that game. Also, eyes. I have never seen eyes done well. They always look a bit too fake, especially with increasingly realistic faces
