Best heroine in a game.

If you are thinking of naming GTA as the answer, we mean the heroine with and "E" at the end. The best double X chromosome protagonist of a game. Not a side kick, not an intermittent companion, but the main lady of the story.

Who is, according to you, one of the best leading female characters that has ever appeared in a video game? And what do you think makes a heroine memorable?

Two of my favourites: Zoey Castillo, from The Longest Journey: Dreamfall.
Intelligent, resourceful and absolutely humane. And April Ryan, from both of the Longest Journey games, the original and the sequel.

Damnit, I was going to be a smartass, and you saw right through it.

There is a severe shortage of female leads. I mean, there's a good number of female characters, even strong ones, but rarely is there female leads. I think I would have to go with (And I suspect by the time I post this, 3 people will have already said this [currently, I appear too be responding to the OP]) Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. She is a strong character, and doesn't degrade into a sex symbol. Think she takes the cake.

Samanya from Red Faction: Geurrilla.

You play as her in the DLC and she is a fucking badass, without having to have stupidly large mammaries or run around half naked:

female Shepard, why? Because she's one of the only female leads whom I have respect for. Most other females I encounter in video games are just eye candy with no brains. Female shepard is just serious and bad ass to boot.
