My personal choice is Faith from Mirror's Edge. Just because her sex appeal was deliberately downplayed. She's not even that pretty, not intentionally ugly, just not hot. Is she a deep, interesting character? No, but she stands against everything that is wrong with female leads in video games.

Agreed, Faith is a perfect example of a great female protagonist.

A vote from me too. I love the fact that she goes against a mass of aliens armed with only a camera, her wits and a dai-jo staff. And she doesn't curse or try too hard to be 'cool'. Can't wait to play BG&E 2.

Man I loved Jade, one of the few videogame characters I ever really cared about...
It broke my heart when I heard the sequel has been put on ice.

I'd have to go with Alyx Vance.
Not only is she a complete badass, she manages to be good-looking without being oversexualized, which seems to be something of an accomplishment in today's games. She's played as an intelligent, strong-willed and witty character, but most of all she just seems so human. She behaves like an actual person would behave, talks like a real person would talk. Definitely the best heroine out there.

I have a few. As noted a few times thus far, Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, for reasons which I shouldn't have to explain. Terra from FFVI, because that was the first game I played with a female protagonist. Good backstory, no hockey love interest, etc etc. Revan in KOTOR, though I played her as a Villain Protagonist.

The choice I have that hasn't been mentioned yet (I think): Female Revya in Soul Nomad and the World Eaters. ...Anybody?
