So bioshock infinite looks pretty awesome. In preparation I started Bioshock 2 again (A very underrated game. I think its fantastic) and at the end of bioshock 2

The big daddy you play as dies at the end

And that was the first time where a main character in anything I've experienced had actually died.

I realize that the spoiler tag is pretty pointless at this point so this thread is bound to be full of them.

Well anyways, It really affected me in a way I really didn't think it would. Me, getting the pure good ending, being the goody two shoes that I am was really thrown through a loop yet oddly at peace with the situation.

So what do you think is the best example of the main character dying? In anything, not necessarily games.

The ending to Halo:Reach

and the ending to
red dead redemption, that scene wear you walk out of the barn
was pretty heart wrenching.

Silly question - Chrono Trigger, of course!

You can go back in time to the moment and save Chrono from death but it's quite possible to miss that and play the rest of the game without the guy who is not only your main protagonist but also the person the game is named after!

If we're talking in a serious, dramatic sense, Terranigma. Almost no-one's played it. It made me cry.

If you have played COD4, as most FPS players seem to have done, I think the has one of the best/most significant/impacting deaths in any games I have played.

Soap doesn't die at the end.

Not Soap, just one of the characters you control over a period of time. During COD4, seeing as there are a few characters you control, I just took the man caught in the nuclear blast as a fairly main character.

Anytime you are given even a small level, on its own, just purely to die is generally good :)

What about Ned Stark?
I don't think it's really fair to count him as THE main character though. A Song of Ice and Fire has such an ensemble cast and he dies so early in the series, I can't be convinced to count him as THE protagonist.
Corollary: I still flipped a shit when he died and cried like a little girl.

OT: PERSONA3PERSONA3PERSONA3PERSONA3!!!!

IF he's dead that is. There are too many hints he could pop up for some undisclosed reason later. Not to mention there were several hints otherwise:

During the execution Arya thought to herself that "it didn't look like her father". When Joffrey shows Sansa her father's head she mentions that "there was something off...". When Catelyn gets his body she says "This isn't my Ned...".

AKA: They are red herrings of a sort. Plot devices made for us to speculate one way or the other. Also, Varys would have had the power to hide him. Some might say "why didn't he join up with Robb and reveal himself?". Because...Sansa was still being held captive. With Ned alive and Jaime captured she would have been in more danger.

If you look on the wikipedia page to "A Dance with Dragons" it shows all the POV characters. One of them is an "unrevealed character" which Martin claims he "wrote off in the first novel". Might be an undead...

Viserys or Drago
...

But who knows given Martin's ability to twist the plot.

Heart of The Alien, sequel to Out of This World, features the death of Lester Knight Chaykin who was the main character from the first game, but through most of the game you play as his alien friend. Either way you take it, it was quite a shocking moment for me.

Kind of similar:
Breakdown has a scene wherein you finally make it to the source of the T'lan, and fight your way to their leader, Nexus, for the final confrontation and just as you land the last punch-
Nexus goes into overdrive. You get your ass handed to you in a gift basket full of fists. You are beaten to the point that all you can do is lie helpless and watch as your partner tries to rescue you. She is easily dealt with, and barely manages to speak her last words to you as the Nuke arrives. Everything goes white...

16 posts without mentioning Persona? For shame, Escapists!

Persona 3, of course. Considering his death ties into the mechanics of the game in a few ways and is intertwined with the story every step of the way, it still hits like a truck, even though you should've seen it coming. I feel envious for all the people who never played FES, and could live in a magical world where the ambiguous original ending isn't confirmed to end with your demise.

I still can't play the game over again :'(

edit: Oh yeah, and when you do learn what actually happened, its EVEN WORSE THAN DYING: the MC will literally spend all of eternity battling Nyx to prevent her from destroying humanity. No rest for you, buddy!

Could you count Solid Snake? I know it doesn't happen persé but his sort of breakdown through the game etc and

{His almost suicide in the graveyard at the end were extremley poignant moments for me. Also, Could one count big boss as a main character?}
