Mass Effect 2, it's just a great sequence. You get killed in an exceptionally cinematic piece of work. It really was creepy stepping onto the deck of the normandy with it exposed to the vacuum of space the planet in view and no sound but your breathing.
Yeah, spoiler alert btw.

That, or the original Mass Effect's intro. Just something about it...
If I have actually spoiled that for anyone I'll eat my arse clean off it's hinges. This was something everyone KNEW before the game was even released.

If intro cinematics count, then I'd go for the opening in Starcraft Brood War or the Mechwarrior 2 intro.
If not, then I'd say Bioshock, possibly Modern Warfare, Fallout 3 was kinda boring, but the big reveal of the outside certainly was awesome, aaand I'll have to do some more thinking...

The intro sequence to MW2 was pretty cool, and the Mass Effect 2

But my all time favourite = Stranger's Wrath

Normally I'd say bioshock but a lot of people have already mentioned it. I'd say brutal legend (I consider the intro to be up until you enter the sandbox and talk to Lars). It's hilarious, epic, and really really fun.

Dead Rising comes to mind. When your being helicoptered in and you get the chance to take pictures of the city in chaos, it's a good way to immerese the player into the story, your safe in the helicopter so your able to absorb the narrative without being attacked but you can also take pictures so you don't have to worry about getting bored.

It's a great way of starting out a game.

other games of note off the top of my head:
Dead Space
Bio Shock
Batman Arkham Asylum
Alan Wake

GoldenEye

No annoying cinematic or tutorial. You're given a gun, an order, and set loose in a no frills, but memorable, zoom into Bond's head.

I don't know if its really a spoiler since BioWare was going around telling everyone Shepard was going to die.

OT: ME2 had a great opening and so did DOW2, something about watching a squad a Space Marines killing Eldar just makes my day.

Half Life - I can't think of any game that stands out as well as that for introductions.

Uncharted 2 is probably the best example. I've never played either game but watching someone else play it, I was instantly hooked into the story.

Armoured core for answer for me, sets the tone quite well and has badass robot fighting. And.....
you get to see white glint fail, which if you played AC 4 is a big deal, i hated that guy. uptill
it hints that this white glint is the raven from the first game.

Half Life 2's opening was great, mostly because of Dr Breen's breencast in my opinion.
