Best item you ever got from a loot driven game.

So I decided to play Borderlands again today for no particular reason. I wanted to see if I could still solo Crawmerax or if I was too rusty. I had given up on farming him a while ago because he just never seemed to drop any pearlescent weapons for me. I downed him on my very first try and was amazed to find a Fearsome Bessie. A sniper rifle that does almost 2000 damage and has a 500% bonus crit damage. Not to mention, it has 100% accuracy when zoomed in. Easily the best sniper in the game and probably the best weapon I've found (although the Hellfire and Double Anarchy sure give it a run for its money).

What are some of the best items my fellow Escapists have found? Be it in Diablo, Borderlands, Torchlight or other loot driven games.

I once found a level 10 shotgun in borderlands that carried my soldier through to his late 20s. It wasn't legendary, just a super-rare... it had a purple name. I ended up using it to kill the RoidRage psycho and the Rakk Hive. Haven't found anything that good since.

I ended up picking up Valius from the Lich King 10 man Heroic for my healing druid right before I quit WoW.

You know...I never thought I would say this but I'm really missing that game right now. :/

Really, a loot-driven game could mean anything.

I mean, I originally thought this was about MMOs, where I could mention there's this card in Ragnarok Online that just allows you to learn a nifty teleport spell without having to be the class that would even learn it.

But then, I could also say "I picked up a brute's rapid-fire grenade launcher and a fighter jet in Saint's Row 3!", because you can take about anything that isn't nailed down in that game.

Let's see...

Oh! This one SMG in Borderlands carried me for ages, thing thing emptied a mag in 3 seconds and reloaded in half of one. I finally replaced it when it just wasn't doing enough damage and I found a similar one of a higher level. Oh, and this sniper shotty I found that was just epic.

I found Anduril in the Return of the King gameboy game, does that count?

Some really epic weapons in the Dark Alliance games, it's just been too long to remember XD

Probably moer, can't remember them off the top of my head though.

[troll]I found a helmet with 3 more strength and 4 more armor in Diablo 3!!![/troll]

Honestly, it is hard to quantify best item. I've gotten a lot of weapon upgrades in Borderlands over the hundreds of hours I've played it...but is item strength a qualifier for "best"? Does getting a level 52 equivalent of a level 48 item make the level 52 version a better item? Does it add more to the game than the level 48 variant?

Then comes Binding of Isaac...so many items, with so many of them making drastic changes to the way your character plays. Some are situationally better rather than just having higher values than a lower ilvl. For example, recently I found a Number 1 on Cain. For those that don't know, Number 1 reduces your range to it's lower amount, as well as increasing your attack speed to the highest rate possible. Pretty awesome, right? Then, the next floor down, I found the Book of Belial, which, for those who don't know, greatly increases the damage of your shots for the current room when used. This made for a combination of pure destruction, killing bosses within seconds.

Other times, however, the Book of Belial is overkill, as your damage is already as high as it can go without the book, completely negating it's effect. This, to me, is a great item that vastly adds to the game...and Binding of Isaac is chock full of these kinds of items that stack in crazy ways. Giant shots that do max damage? Cool. FOUR giant shots that do max damage? Awesome. FOUR giant shots that have homing? Oh my, I'm in love.

The Borderlands equivalent of these items that are game changers are class mods. Granted, a lot of the class mods miss the mark of being significant, some, however, drastically change the way the game is played. Some so drastically change the dynamics of the game that you decide to change your build. However, these are, for the most part, easily obtainable and don't vary enough between each other to really warrant mention.

Diablo 2 had items that significantly change the dynamics of the game, however, they were rarely "drops". Most items with interesting effects were runewords. The obvious one is Enigma, which changed everything so drastically that it became a necessity for nearly all builds of serious players. However, a lot of them go under the radar and are unfairly criticized because of Enigma's prominence...such as Chaos which allowed Assassin's to base their build around Whirlwind, a Barbarian skill, and Beast which spawned the likes of the shapeshifting Sorceress.

MMOs, for the most part, don't have items that fit my bill of being considered good items. They do definitely have items that have a higher ilvl, and have marginally higher stats than items of lower ilvl, but I don't consider that a quality item...but I've ranted way too much.

Don't remember it's name, but I got the best staff in Age of Conan during my first raid. The necromancers was furious since I was a demonologist and rolled for it. :D

For me it will always be the Elephant Gun in Borderlands.

The only loot-driven game I've played is Borderlands, and even though I've found some pretty cool weapons there my vote definitely lands on the shield I found. I can't quite remember the stats on it, but it upped my health a whole lot, plus it also increases my teammates health and give all of us a pretty decent regeneration. Strange thing is, I found it really early in the game, maybe level 15-20. I've found shields that give me more health, but none that gives such a boost for the whole team. Most likely I'm never getting rid of it.

That had to of been a class mod.

Shields don't help teammates at all, and only have one mod, so it either gave you increased health or health regen, never both.

Class mod? What, like only works for one of the four classes? That might be it, but I promise you that it gives me more health, regen, and increases my teams health. I'm not sure if it gives them regen though, I think it did (haven't played in a year or so).

Oh yeah, those. Hmmm, now you've made me doubt myself. I'll have to boot it up later and check it out.

Well, I haven`t played a lot of loot-driven games, at least not in the past. Recently, however, me and my roomme started playing Diablo 2, and it`s been really fun. Can`t really remember the best item, but I´d say my Orb stick or whatever it`s called is pretty good, gives +1 to all sorc. abilities, plus several bonuses to specific abilities, and it has lots of other stuff it gives, as well.

Every time I get a new gun in Borderlands that's better than my go-to gun i always feel like it's the best gun ever and nothing will ever top it. Ever. And you all know you think the same thing.

So my vote goes towards the never-ending supply of great guns that easily impress me in Borderlands. Is that cheating?

Hmm, probably a Maliwan Hellfire which murdered absolutely everything and everyone.
It had great accuracy, high fire rate and excellent base damage too, on top of the over-powered effect.
I loved that gun...

Stealth Suit MK II from Old World Blues DLC in Fallout: New Vegas.

The perfect armour for stealth character builds. But the best thing? It talks to you.
