Demon's Souls and Dark Souls i guess. After that the Disgaea series for its humor. Sadly most "normal" jrpgs seem to reuse the same "moe" characters over and over again.

Xenoblade Chronicles easily takes it unless we are counting Valkyria Chronicles as a JRPG rather than a strategy game in which case that wins they are also my two favourite games released this generation and my second and third favourite games of all time as well so yeah pretty high praise from me.

Other notable ones off the top of my head would be
Demons Souls (if it counts)
The Last Story and Lost Odyssey

Oh wait yeah, if Valkyria Chronicles counts as JRPG then that just outright wins. Such a fun game, I think it's a real shame they moved to the PSP, it had built up a cult following and the next one could have been even more popular on a PS3

Persona 3 Portable, although admittedly I haven't played Xenoblade yet.

I don't count Valkyria Chronicles. I don't see how it's an RPG.

There's too many to pick just one:p

From what I've played so far:
FF13 and 13-2
TWEWY
That one game Atlus made for the DS
Xenoblade Chronicles
I would say The Last Story but it runs like shit on Dolphin. And I hate the voice acting.

From games that I'll be playing soon and will probably love:
Tales of Vesperia
Eternal Sonata
Lost Odyssey

Fine, I'll just toss my Xenoblade vote onto the pile.

I guess I'll bother to explain. I get drawn into quite a lot of JRPGs by the premise, but the gameplay usually lets me down by dragging the game out through meaningless boring grind. Xenoblade is fresh, encourages exploration, has many side quests, and allows you to continue the story whenever you wish. Yes, there may be things in the way of the story, like monsters in the way of your journey to the story location, but it's never "SPEND HOURS GRINDING AGAINST THE SAME OLD ENEMIES FR A TOKEN CUTSCENE".

Also, it has male slut armour.

It's an SRPG.
It's like Disgaea, FF: Tactics, Agarest War, etc...
I get that it's a strategy game. I just can't see what makes it a strategy RPG other than being Japanese.

Dark Souls

... What?, there aren't many JRPGs for the PC and I really liked Dark Souls, even more than many west-made RPGs.

Let's see, Persona 4 Golden, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, Lost Odyssey.

Way to change the title OP...
Kingdom Hearts 3D? You prefered it to Birth by Sleep? Interesting, though I did enjoy both immensely and must get aorund to finishing 3D someday soon, I've had it since I got my 3DS way back in august after all. I personally can't wait to see what comes next in Kingdom Hearts, at this point I wish they'd hurry up and just rush Versus 13 out the door (it can't live up to the expectations by now) and get a shift on with KH3.

A Wii U Kingdom Hearts would definately cement my purchasing of a Wii U, much like pokemon and good Sonic games Kingdom Heats sells me systems...

[sub]Technically he's kind of half correct in saying last gen, the first console of the coming generation is already out, and despite what you may think about it due to it's specifications, it is part of the next generation, the next gen is upon us, just not as we'd all necessarily like.[/sub]

OT: PS2/GCN/DC/XBOX gen: Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, Dragon Quest 8, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2.

PS3/X360/Wii gen: Dark Souls/Demons Souls just because this list is sparse (I do love the games but if they were out in the PS2 gen they'd be nowhere near the top of my JRPG list..), Xenoblade Chronicles (it's brilliant, love the FF12-style combat system).

I don't know how handhelds fit into generations to be honest so...
DS: FF3, FF4, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (if you haven't played that you should feel bad.), THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU, Pokemon Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black &white, Black 2 & White 2.

PSP: KH: Birth By Sleep. Crisis Core. That is all, those are the only PSP games I own. Don't even own a PSP I just borrowed my brothers...

3DS: Kingdom Hearts 3D, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (if it counts, it has levelling and stuff...)

Xenoblade Chronicles easily.

Nier coming a close second.

I don't like to lump the handhelds with the consoles. But the 3/DS has some great titles. PSV would too if they bothered to put the PSP ones on the shop.
The DS is a godsend for JRPG lovers, a bunch of dragon quest remakes, FF4 and FF3 in 3D with the former voice acted rather well and new features for both, Chrono Trigger remade, TWEWY, the pokemon games I'd count as JRPG's or a particularly old school variety. Best JRPG format for me besides the PS2.

NEver sure where to put handhelds in terms of generation, I think the 3DS and Vita are technically the same generation as the Wii U?

Persona 4 came out last gen right? In that case P4 Golden... hehe.
Also special mention to Dark Souls as well, because tight combat and interesting way of story telling, thats why.

Persona 4,Persona 3 FES and Dark Souls.
Once I read the words "best JRPG" I stopped reading right there and immediately wrote this answer without a second thought.
you know why?
Because not doing so is morally wrong.

Haven't bothered much with JRPGs this gen. They didn't really improve with better graphics, as other games did imo.
Dragons Dogma is probably the winner for me. Could use a little work, but all in all I had tons of fun with the game.

Is there a reason everyone is playing dumb about what the OP meant by last gen? The WiiU is out, that was the beginning of this gen, the Nextbox and PS4 will be out this year...most likely.

My favorite last gen JRPG was Lost Odyssey, too bad it was a 360 exclusive. I would love to play it on my PC for many years to come.

I hate most JRPG's but if I had to pick one I guess it would be Dark Souls. Or does that not count?
