Just wondering what everybody's opinion is on who is currently the best melodic death metal band, suggestions to good mostly unknown bands are welcome too!

Tie between Dark Tranquility and Scar Symmetry for me...

Edit: (gonna get bashed for this...) old AND new In Flames.

I never understood all the sub-categories of metal. I can just about recognise Trad-Metal and Black-Metal, then I'm lost.

If it's metal I'll give it a listen, I might like it and I might not.

Yeah, same, i only use sub-categorizing as a way to identify bands with the same overall style, not for arranging them in quality or some other pointless categories, it's better than saying "Those bands with the double pedal and double guitars." And, same, if it's metal, i'm down.

Do Amon Amarth count? I'm pretty sure they're melodic death. If so then Imma choose them.

They kick immeasurable amounts of ass live.

With Oden on our side and Twilight of the Thunder god were amazing albums.

Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom.

I wouldn't really say that COB is Melodic Death Metal, but their Wikipedia page says so along with pretty much everything else.

Hell yeah :D

Their early work is also amazing, but they have a different sound.

Disregard if these aren't melodic death metal: Nodes of Ranvier, Kamelot, and Symphony X.

Metal isn't really my genre, but I know what I like

My Vote goes to Children of Bodom and dude their first 4 albums, there is no way you can call that anything but Melodic Death Metal.

I say its totally Death Metal, but I just wouldn't say its melodic. Theres no real melody to it, but I still love it and I have all their albums

I don't see how you can say it's not melodic, Bed of Razors, Children of Bodom, Silent Night Bodom Night, Kissing the Shadows, Children of Decadence, Bodom After Midnight, Lake Bodom, all of these have alot of melody in them.

Definately, Hatebreeder is my favorite Children of Bodom album, it just has so many good songs on it like Downfall.
