World of warcraft, its probably the best fantasy MMORPG out there.
however if i was to give a few free alternates i would say
Fiesta- the Multiplayer task thinngys were good and suited people of all skills and abilities
Runescape- its large userbase, and vast amounts of things to do, however your only going to get a month's good freeplay

I've played many RPGMMOs: Maplestory, AQWorlds, WoW, D&D Online, Everquest, and Runescape.

My favorite was WoW though.

Guild Wars is my favorite. A rather fine story it has. :D I've tried all of the parts of the pvp but didn't really play them that much. They were fun though for some time. I just sucked pretty bad. :p

its a hard decision DDO is very good at what its doing, but i just love my world exploring in LOTRO. ( I am *take cover* a roleplayer, so that are the only legal possibilities i have).

Do me a favour kill every stupid kid joining an RP-Server without knowing how to act with a rusty fork.

Lotros GM's are pretty strict with handling those so i go with them and the Banhammer of Khazad Dûm

As many issues I've had with WoW since BC came out and even considering I quit the game due to not enjoying it at all anymore, I'd still have to answer this thread with WoW. No other MMO has even come close to drawing me in like that game did.

If I was to choose an MMO right now to be playing though I'd probably go with DDO. Not nearly as much fun as WoW was but it is definitely my favorite of the mostly free games. And in all honesty I like it more than any pay-to-plays other than WoW that I can think of right now.

EVE Online all the way

Well, okay Battleground Europe is the best MMO out there, but it's not a RPG.

I have played WOW trial, it was okay, I think

I would have to say either City of Heroes/Villains or Champions Online in my personal opinion. Though I think WoW is considered the best by most people.

Star Wars Galaxies.

Besides Galaxies, I've played D&DO, WAR, FFXI, WoW, and tons of free ones. However, nothing has really beaten Galaxies for me. The presentation of it, and the general feel that is thrust onto you (At least, mostly before the game went to Hell) was extraordinary. Let's not ignore the fact that SWG was in it's prime BEFORE if attempted to copy WoW, thus showing that an MMO can be awesome without what WoW does.

The customization of characters was the most expansive I've seen of any game, the worlds were sprawling, it's mechanics were awe-inspiring, ship-to-ship combat was amazing, especially on cruisers when you have friends manning turrets/etc. Everything about it was just damn good.

Ok lets give a quick change of pace to things, I have a question for you, In your opinion (and please be rational) and with at least having played 3 rpgmmos, What is the best rpgmmo you have played?

I think I'll go for Dungeons and Dragons online. Even if it lacks open world exploring, the quest, puzzle and level design is pretty good and I like the combat better than warcraft.
DDO is AMAZING! the f2p is good, but in high end content (lvl 16-20) there isen't much thats free :( but! there's still free stuff :D (only dungeons are restricted by the f2p-p2p model)
i was playing 2 closed beta's b4 it was released, and was on the pre-order preview, i still play today :) and i'm proly gonna be playing in like an hour.

if ya need/want help, msg Kevonovitch on Cannith. if your going for server pop: Cannith ot Thelanis (Cannith is GMT, Thelanis is PST, i'm actually pst, but cannith has more people at all hours :X and and low ping :) )

The 3 non-Browser MMORPGs I've run with have been MapleStory, FlyFF, and WoW. Of the three, only WoW has been able to keep me hooked for more than a few months.

As for browser-based ones, I'd really have to give it to Kingdom of Loathing. Technically, not a MMORPG, but then again, at points it is (at lesast while I was playing it, Hobopolis and the Slime Well (slime tube? slime pit? something like that) required your Guild to unlock it together and, while granted not everyone was required to give it a go, the more people you had running it the easier things went. You even had loot to split up at the end of the thing. And it was a nice departure from "standard" F2P games, as it's model was pretty interesting: pay increments of $15 for in-game items that were pretty handy. Go to the game store to trade these for other in-game items, some of which were only in the store for that month, some of which were only available a few days out of the month, and some of which were just there. And, like many F2P games, you could sell the items you bought with your money (or traded through the Game Store) for in-game money.

Puzzle?

I'd say Darkfall seemed pretty interesting, but I hate MMOs really, so...

There is only one big difference and a few smaller ones between mumorpugers.

- aesthetics
- gameplay
- the business model of F2P & P2P

Mumorpugers are all basically the same thing, with my 3rd point as the biggest difference between them.

P2P MMOs are inclined towards pleasing their customers and hang on to the "the only difference between players is how much time is invested" scheme.

F2P MMOs are inclined towards exploiting the human psyche with complex psychology. They hang on to a scheme called "the only difference between players is how much money is invested (in the cash shop)".

I've played literally every mumorpuger out there (with the exception of Maple Story and those super cartoonish ones), and all the F2P ones are the same shit.
Once they start out - they're great and fun. After a few months, the developers start putting up items that give players advantages, in the cash shop.
After a few more months, the developers start putting up items that give players insane advantages, in the cash shop.
Soon, those who didn't invest money in their characters, start "whining" about the rich people who just pay up and outrank everyone who doesn't; soon, the community starts collapsing and the company notices it - so they start milking the "cash cow" even more, until the game closes down, and the company moves on to another project.
Mind you, there is some incredibly witty psychology included in those F2P mumorpugers.

P2P MMOs, on the other hand, are definately better, because they are (more) FAIR to all players. Take a look at WoW and tell me why they're doing so much better than eg. Silkroad Online.

I guess that's pretty much it.
I totally agree with you here. It saddens me to know that EA Sports decided to include this model in it's last two editions of the NHL series. It's here to stay unfortunately.

If I had to go for an MMORPG that it is still possible to play then I'd say Anarchy Online, as that has alot of unique things and it is nice to plan where to put all the thousands of skill points each level and thing about implants and gear you can fit on whith other stuff. Also I did rather like my level 24 Engineer running around with a pet so high level it came up as ??? to me (I asked someone and it was apparently level 56) also >200 levels is pretty nice as a timesink.
Wow, it is always strange to see someone else mention AO. AO was my first MMORPG and it holds a special place in my heart because of it. I played from the Notum Wars expansion up to right before Lost Eden came out. I got my Meta-Physicist up to 190 (15-20 Alien levels) and my Trader was around 120 (10-15 Alien levels). Then I had a slew of alts as well. Those were my main two. I can't be bothered to go back to it's dated combat now, but if they ever released an AO 2 I would pre-order that shit. AO got about 8 years out of me.

As for my favorite? I would say City of Heroes or Guild Wars. CoH/V for their combat mechanics. Guild Wars for the awesome balance among such diverse classes.

WoW, it is the only one that does not fall short on any aspect with which to rate a game
