Garry's Mod is pretty amazing. I've seen a lot of things done with it. However, the best mod I've ever played is probably Natural Selection. That, too, is amazing and very well done. Although, it has been awhile since I've played it so not sure where it currently stands, but it was at least one of the best ones.

Sven Coop for HL1. I can't wait for the one for HL2 but it gets delayed so much we'll probably never see it.

Humm, Black Mesa Source *drools* I can't wait for that to be released. I wonder though, is it going to be free, I mean, Valve gave their blessing of sorts to the team working on it right? Wonder if that means they'll put it up on Steam.

they will put it on steam, but I highly doubt they will charge you for it...I thought valve opposed it though...I think I read that somewhere but I don't know

Not sure, according to Wikipedia Valve asked them to remove the 'Source' from the title so as not to confuse the mod with official Valve products. That's about all I've read on it. Seems like a good thing. At least it wasn't a cease and desist ^^"

Hmph. Well, it's not under copyright infringement unless they claim the story was that of the devteam.

Long, long time lurker, but for some reason this thread has made me finally register.

Hands down the finest mod I've ever played, and indeed one of my top ten games of all time, was Air Buccaneers for UT2004. It came third (I think) in the last 'Make Something Unreal' competition.

Unfortunately, its rather tough to fully convince people of its excellence, since its a peculiar thing to describe.

Quickly: Hot air balloons + Pirates = Airbuccaneers

Huge teamwork involved, ideally need one man to fly a ship, one man to load and fire a cannon and one person to aim said cannon. Team death match, king of the hill and 'treasure hunt' game modes. You had a rope to hook on to the bottom of ships to board other vessels, gunpowder sack 'grenades' (which can be loaded into a cannon to make a flamethrower effect), sky-mines, and a community chock full of Finnish pirate-wannabes.

I really miss it to this day.

Oh, Air Buccaneers! I have the version of that which came with UT2004 ECE! It's very, very fun, even just playing the bots.

I'm kinda amazed that no one has named the most famous mod that has become a mainstream game:

Counterstrike

That's just the thing. People don't consider it a mod anymore, especially now that we have CS: Source.

That kinda reinforces my point.

The mod was so good, that VALVe decided to make it into a full game.

Oh, is it just me or is it like a law that every FPS should have a zombie mod? I mean come on, I can't think of a bad zombie mod...well I can, but it's still fun as hell.
