You know what District 9 and Dark Knight didn't deserve to win, deffinately not Dark Knight. 10 years from now what film do you think people will remember, District 9 or Avatar?

And give it a rest with Dark Knight being snubbed, it was nominated for 6 Oscars and won 2and that's good by industry standards. So what it didn't win best picture? Thats becuase it wasn't the best film that year, terribly overrated. Was it better than Slumdog? No. Was it better than In Bruges? No. Was it better than Waltz with Bashir? NO!

It's a competant film at best with a frankly very average performance by Christian Bale and many relatively forgetable characters. The whole thing was saved pretty much saved by Heath Ledger as the Joker, you must understand though that his great performance as a comic book villian is enough to entitle him to best sporting actor but not best bloody picture. One man a film does not make.

People on the internet are nerds and nerds love Batman and regardless of wether the film deserved it or not they think that it's best thing ever becuase it's about a guy who wears a cape and fights crime.

Do you honestly think District 9 deserved an oscar? The big twist felt like something from a bad sitcom. It's not a bad film it's just cheap entertainment nothing more.

You guys can name a couple of movies that got robbed at the Oscars in the past 3 years. I personally thought that District 9 was robbed last year by Hurt Locker. And that Slumdog Millionaire was shit, and Dark Knight shouldve won then. But, I want to hear your opinions.
district 9 is an amazing film which is underrated and not many people have seen it, i recon in a few years it will be a cult classic

as much as i liked district 9, i also loved hurt locker it was truly a great film and some moments were really tense

10 years? Avatar. But what about 30 years? 40? 50?

Which 1968 film is better remembered 2001 or Planet of the Apes?

The obvious one is Dark Knight. But I felt that Children of Men got ROBBED. And American Gangster
I love that film and I find almost nobody that has seen it. Did Last King Of Scotland win anything? I cant remember but another good underrated 'big' movie that seems to have slipped slipped by a lot of people.

On another note, I can see Kick-Ass being snubbed when awards come around again, another intelligent film part of a 'niche' culture that the mainstream just wont want to acknowledge in my opinion

To be honest that's really good question. I can't think of an answer off the top of my head, they're both great films, both iconic, both sci-fi, both pretty much engrained in popculture to the same extent, both probably refferenced equal number of times in the Simpsons and so on.

I guess at a pinch I would say... Planet of the Apes? Because there's been more sequels and remakes but I bet the version most people now these days is the Tim Burton remake.

Why, which one do you think?

Persepolis losing out to Ratatouille. Granted, Ratatouille was excellent, but I think Persepolis deserved it more.

I would have said 2001, while Planet of the Apes has certainly become well entrenched in pop culture even with a remake it isn't that well discussed or remembered as an actual film instead of a plot twist.

2001 on the other hand is deeply engrained as a film. It constantly appears on lists of great science fiction films and list of must see movies. The film itself is still well known and well regarded.

Now I'm in no way critising Planet of the Apes here but I feel that similarly "Dances with smurfs" will be more remembered than the actual Avatar film itself. Whereas District 9 whilst no 2001 will go down as a sci-fi classic in it's own right.

Fair point, and I agree that 2001 is the more influential and the more important film and I preffer it to Planet of the Apes, I just know more people that have seen Planet of the Apes than 2001.

Really? I can't think of anybody I know that's seen Planet of the Apes, I knew one that saw the remake and hated it. On the other hand most people I know have seen 2001 or at least have heard of the monoliths.

You know what I'm probably being too hard on District 9 it is a brilliant film... still don't quite think it deserved best picture though. However I think a lot of people are being too hard on Hurt Locker as well, it is a superbly well made film and really plays on your tensions in every single bomb scene which is a triumph in of itself that it doesn't become bogged down or too samey. The sound direction is brilliant, and the camera work is brillaint as well. I found the script to be suprisingly enjoyable aswell, perhaps mostly because of cameos from Ralph Fiennes.

But neither of these films were the best picture in my opinion, they only really gave it to Hurt Locker because they realised it was time they gave best picture to a female director. (Still never been awarded to a black film maker.)

Moon was my favourite film of the year, either that or Let the Righ One In.

The first Lord of the Rings lost to Amelie Poulin, which was a fantastic movie. But yes, for the most part, the Oscars are full of shit.

I agree that District 9 was robbed. But I liked slumdog millionaire and it was just as worthy as The Dark Knight for the Oscar.

The oscars is nothing more than self-indulgent garbage of the worst type. Self-congratulatory twats with nothing better to do than pat themselves on the back. The only awards of any merit are usually the technical ones, and barely that.
Most of the movies they award are so blatantly predictable you wonder if they got the award just for being so inclusive of a film that everyone could understand it and admire the flashing bright colors onscreen without having to think about anything for a solid 2 hours (if that).
When you watch the oscars the only robbery going on is of your time, because they have stolen precious life moments from you with no intention of ever returning them. Fuck the oscars.
