Best new IP of this generation?

The Witcher isn't exactly a new IP though, the books have been around for decades, no?

Personally, I would say Mirror's Edge... but that just means I'll have to go sob in a corner next.

And, just in jest, Fallout 3 and NV. Because if the NMA crowd is going to complain that Bethesda totally deviated from Fallout canon, then we have to give them credit for developing a great new IP, no? Sword cuts both ways, right guys?

There is no one best IP of this gen but I think it must be a tie between Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles as neither series has a truly awful moment. Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed are also great IPs.
The Souls and Bioshock series also have a lot going for them.
Little Big Planet too

hell, I defy anyone to say there weren't any good new IPs this gen, it's bloody silly how many good ones there are

Assassin's Creed
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Portal

Now are we talking about series that can go further or are we just talking about a single game?

Either Portal or Bioshock.

Bioshock is just a brilliant representation of what true adult gaming is, and it's a fully original world built around commenting against a popular philosophy. We've had more than our fair share of genuinely mature, thought provoking games before (Looking at you, Persona 4), but this was actually a REALLY popular one. So that alone makes it a big deal.

Portal should be obvious. Putting aside the brilliant narrative structure and dark comedy, it's villain immediately became one of the greatest we've ever had, has a kickass FEMALE lead and a (sort of) female villain, and the gameplay was genuinely 'new', and showed us what physics engines could do if game devs think outside the box.

Truly big, new things with gaming. We had some nice games this gen, but I strain to think of games that will be remembered as 'industry-changers' a few years from now. MAYBE Mass Effect, but Bioshock and Portal 1/2 set new standards and ideas in ways that Ocarina of Time and Half Life did before them.

Gotta be Mass Effect for my money, despite the dodgy ending to ME3. Bioware took such a huge risk in deciding from the outset they were going to make a trilogy with imported saves, variables and everything else, and they still somehow pulled it off. It's such a hugely detailed universe and there's the potential for them to do so much more with it now.

Close second would be Assassins Creed.

The Batman Arkham games too if those count. Again Arkham Asylum is one of my all time favourites
Uh, yeah, Batman, that...new...character...

I'm going to go with Portal. I don't really think I need to say why.

I didn't say Batman I said Batman Arkham specifically. That's why I asked if they counted

Despite the absolute shite ending, mass effect, had much fun with that series.

witcher would definitely be up there too...

probably add on uncharted, it's one of the very very few shooters i enjoyed, and i enjoyed all 3 of them greatly.

InFamous for me simply because that game was fun as hell to play, the music was awesome, and the story was really awesome.

Assassin's Creed gets a special mention because I just love that series so damn much, but inFamous's story just smacked me in the face.

I'm provisionally going to say Darksiders, but that will have to be verified when I can afford the second one. If it's naff then we default to either Bastion or Red Dead Redemption.

Bioshock easily, the first one is my favourite game of all time and it's one and only sequel infinite looks like it it may possibly be even better.

I'd have to say Alan Wake, simply because it's not part of any established series/universe whatsoever, the combat was very different from many games (I'm also slightly biased because I love books and horror/mysteries and consider myself an amateur writer), and it ended without needing a sequel. Yes, I know it's going to get one. I'm kind of miffed about that. I wish more games came out which were of the same quality of Alan Wake, but weren't sequels, or turned into a series. There are not enough stand-alone games which are really good. As great as Red Dead Redemption was, it was a psuedo-sequel/reboot of Red Dead Revolver. Alan Wake was simply created. It wasn't a reboot, a spiritual successor or anything like that.

Portal would have to be next only because of it's humour (As cool as it is, I wasn't a massive fan of portals being the main function of a puzzle game), and the only reason it's not first is beacause it got a full length sequel, which did seem to drag on about midway through the game.

I'm going to swing slightly left field here with Dragon's Dogma.
Close second is the D' Souls series.
In the handheld market I'll agree with The World Ends With You.

inFAMOUS, definitely. inFAMOUS 2 is the closest thing I've played to a damn near perfect game in a long time.

Honorable mentions also go to Assassin's Creed (If AC3 can redeem the minor drop in quality of AC Revelations), Dead Rising, Little Big Planet, Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Portal.

The Mass Effect series, it may have had a shitty ending, but the rest was awesome
Agreed. It was the lowest levels of human-centric thinking I've seen in a game. Don't get me wrong, it was still very closed minded, but less so than other games. Still waiting for the game where you're an alien race who was merely exploring for scientific reasons, then the racist humans try to exterminate you because you look strange.
