Mark of the Ninja. I love that stealth game, and I'm thinking of doing something rarely seen. Play it again. The only games I did that with is KotOR 1&2 and only after a few years.
Dark Souls. You can quote sales at me all day long, doesn't negate the fact that it is really god damn good and more of a commercial success than a fair few AAA games.
Also FTL, also Binding of Isaac, also Minecraft, but we all know there are plenty of successful indie games.
It has sucked over 1,000 hours of my life, both in its single and multi player modes. It's also very, very original in its ambition and game mechanics, and so far its the only good game of its kind bar two sub-par knock offs (namely War of the Roses and the slightly better Chivalry). I'm looking very forward to Bannerlord (which at this rate will arrive at 2020!).
If you like the 2DRPGs of yore, like Fire Emblem, Secret of Mana, FF1-6, Dragon Quest, & Chrono Trigger, I highly recommend the Aveyond series for PC, the 3ed installment, which was episodic, was probably the best oldschool-style RPG I've ever played. Whisper of a Rose & 3 Stars of Destiny were great too.
& there's always Minecraft for artists & LEGO fans who want to save money on tools.
It'd be more interesting if this thread was asking about non-AAA but also non-indie titles. One of the things I feel like had been the most jarring change with this generation is that the middle ground between indie and AAA is getting smaller and smaller. The PS2 era had a plethora of games that occupied this middle ground. The soar in developing costs seemed to have polarized these games somewhat. Indie hits to me feels like it occupies an entirely different market for some reason.
FTL is the poster child of indie hits - born out of a Kickstarter success story. Minecraft of course with its non-standard delivery/purchasing method.
In terms of non indie though I think all the Platinum games count (Bayonetta, Vanquish). Binary Domain was good, does Spec-Ops: the line count?
Oh and El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. That game was never destined to sell well but man did that game have some beautiful landscapes and imageries.
Most of my picks have been mentioned already, but what the hell. Nobody's going to read this.
-Terraria
-Bastion
-The Binding of Isaac (initially just made in the creator's spare time, no less)
-Orcs Must Die 1&2
-FTL: Faster Than Light
-Legend of Grimrock
-Magicka (game crashes suck ass, but eh)
-Sword of the Stars 1 (not 2)
Terraria.
I spent $10 and got way more $10 of entertainment. I will play the game a little when the new big update is added future and I could potentially sink a lot more sink more hours into it.
Bastion
it is wonderful game and it has an amazing soundtrack

For my money, it will be Starbound for sure.
Purely personal choice since I love space, I love sandbox games, and I love building.
