Disgaea really isn't a 'JRPG', it's a SRPG or TRPG.:D
Wait it isn't? So is final fantasy tactics a jrpg? Whats a SRPG/TRPG? Are you making this up?:O
Yes, FFT = S/TRPG or Strategy Role Playing Game or Tactics Role Playing Game.
It has to do with how you play the game, the way the battle system is made really.
The defining trait is the battle system? Not the fact that they are Japanese role playing games? Doesn't that sound a little backwards?
Bah, arbitrary terminology sucks. I'm gonna call them.........uh.......I don't know.
It's the same with First-Person-Shooters or 4X games.
Just because a FPS is made in Japan doesn't mean you call it a JFPS or if you have an Action/Adventure (A/A) game you don't call it a JA/A (for Japan) or an AA/A (for America) or an EA/A (for Europe).

JRPGs tend to be VERY Japanese.
They reference or are set in very Asian environments with stories and battle systems that fit a certain 'Japanese way' of thinking and acting.
The characters also tend to look like they're Asian.

Chrono Trigger.

The Persona series is great, but there's something timeless in how the two Chrono games are presented.

Not an easy call for me.

Shadow Hearts
That's a pretty cool game. I found a way to cheat toward the end - requires wax paper, a marker and tape :)

Pokemon, the "Tales of..." series, and, while probably not the -best-, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale has turned out to be -really- fun.

Not sure if anyone here bothered to mention Grandia 2, not just pretty with solid storyline but also having a combat system that made sense!
Yep, Grandia 2 was excelent in pretty much every way, and also had extremely good turn based combat system, which I'm fairly sure even many sceptics would like.

I'm stuck between two:
Chrono Trigger
Kingdom Hearts (though I'm not certain if it's entirely a JRPG)
