that was still boring for me. "Huray! now we can listen to some old NPC talk about his life! WOOT!"
Excuse me!? How dare you call Patrick Stewart "some old NPC"!

OT: I'd say GTAIV had a pretty understated intro -- which was awesome because it set the tone of the whole game. The same with Red Dead Redemption: the underwhelming introduction set the tone, set the theme, and yet still managed to be awesome.

Redemption was an amazing intro. And, oh, that piano music at the start as well. I gotta hand it to Rockstar -- they do know how to make an intro that gets you psyched to play the game!
What confuses me, now that i completed the game is:
Why did they get off a boat when John's home is near Blackwater and the Agents live in Blackwater? Where did they come from?

I enjoy the Fallout series' openings with the "War, war never changes" speech, and I am looking forward to that speech and then getting shot in the face twice in Fallout: New Vegas.
I was going to type this but quoting exactly what you said was easier.

Now I can't be the only one who loves the Guilty Gear XX opening

I've always liked (ever since I first saw it) L4D2's opening cinematic.

"...Wait for official instruction. Huh, wait my ass."
"Kill all sons of bitches. That's my official instruction."
Kick door open, explodes zombie head with shottie.

Good times.

This one really does set the tone. Somber, mysterious, and epic.

Edit: Oh and of course the N64 Zelda games!

I would say my favorites are Bioshock, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, and of course, God of War 3.
The best part is near the end of the intro where you come up against one of the Big Three:
I don't know how to embed the youtube video, but here's the link:
I forgot how good the first Halo's intro was, I hated the other ones though.
Metroid Prime 1 had a really good sci-fi intro as well.

Two other older intro gems were Age of Kings and Age of Mythology:

This should be on everyone's list. So many hours wasted, and such a great introscene! Red Alert!
Also..how do you place movies ;( tried the embedcode but didn't work.?

Id say the Fallout 3 Vault 101 tutorial does a very impressive job of immersing you in the world around you. Too many games start with a confusing hell torn battle sequence that just abandons all pacing for schizophrenic craziness. Fallout starts with just the right amount of action to make some character decisions and allows you to build an emotional connection with the people around you, mainly Amata and your Dad.
