Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man in Mass Effect 2 was incredible. That was some of the best game voice acting I've heard in awhile.

the translation to spanish(from Spain, not southamerican) of Section 8, seriously, it's just so annoying, how can battle hardened marines sound so teenagery and bored?

The best I've seen was easily Persona 4 or the Legacy of Kain saga. The worst was probably something like Castlevania Symphony of the Night.

Tony Plana as Manuel Calavera in Grim Fandango!

I find it funny that most of these comments regard to bad scripting. Just because someone is forced to say something ridiculous it doesn't neccisarily mean the acting was terrible.

OT: I would honestly say the best voice acting I've ever heard was in MW2, right atmosphere, good delivery, excellent cast. Not all, but a lot of the dragon age voice acting is very good. Liam Neeson in Fallout 3, though the rest was awful.

As for WORST not WORSE, I'd say voice acting in games in general is pretty pathetic, the actors are cheap, and they don't take it so seriously, it is certainly getting better though. Soon great hollywood actors will probably come from games instead of the other way around. I suppose in low budget games, bad voice acting can be forgiven, but in a game like... (dare I use COD again) Black ops, with an all star cast, bad voice acting is unforgivable. Gary Oldman's Resnov is the only good thing about the acting in that game.

Give it time, and voice acting in games will be incredible, and if you look at the pattern over time acting is getting batter and better. Acting is hard though, directors can destroy a performance, as can script, animation, everything really. It is unfair to lay all the blame on acting alone.

I look forward to hearing Christopher Lee in a game.

Most of the voice acting from L4D1 is actually really good. The camraderie of the main characters really shows through. For me L4D2 just feels like they're reading their lines instead of acting them. Not as bad as the worst VAs, but nowhere near the first.

And of course, Fem/Shep. Jen Hale. One of my favourite VAs generally, but some of her work in Mass Effect has really affected me on an emotional level because of the quality of her work.

Honourable mentions:

Geeting Keeley Hawes to do the voice of reboot Lara was inspired. I think she throws herself into the task wholeheartedly, and as a fan I thank her for it.

Halo may not be the best, but it always felt like the VAs were trying to convey the emotion of the scene, even if sometimes they fell a little short.

Don't have many for worst besides the obvious. FFX was a train wreck and Res Evil 1 was saved only by how bad it was, that it looped right back to funny again.

EDIT: On an unrelated note, I used to have your avatar. It actually managed to confuse me when I saw Squall again, i thought for a second I'd made a thread and forgotten about it.

Best: Since Mass Effect has been mentioned (Jennifer Hale, Ali Hillis, Liz Sroka, Steve Blum, Seth Green, Martin fucking Sheen, so good) I thought I'd mention Tales of Vesperia and Persona 3&4.

There's a lot of actor overlap in localizations of Japanese games, especially RPGs, and you get some really good actors here. This is one case where I'm not annoyed at the lack of dual audio [small](though I'm still a little miffed that I can't play through at least once with Yui Horie, Rie Kugimiya and Romi Paku's voices in P4)[/small].

Michelle Ruff (RITA MORDIO!), Troy Baker (YURI LOWELL!), Danielle Judovits (CHIE! ESTELLE!), Laura Bailey (RISE!), Karen Strassman (AIGIS!), Tara Platt (ELIZABETH!).. Now that I look at it, almost all my favorite actors in these games are female.

However, it's almost equal, since Yuri Lowell counts as at least three or four men.

Worst: Oh God, with such a great cast in Persona 3 you'd think they'd get someone better for Fuuka. The worst part? She talks in all of your battles. And it's PAINFUL. Ikutsuki (the chairman) is awful too, but at least
he's completely fucking insane, so maybe all his dialogue up to the reveal was a (bad) act.

It's almost worse than Just Cause 2 and other games where the voice acting is just bad all the way through. In P3, they set you up with good acting and then knock you down with Fuuka. There are no other characters with that bad acting in the game, but since she's a main character, it eats at my soul.

[small]Elizabeth chews the scenery, but it's completely justified (she's not from around here). She makes everything sound otherworldly and inexplicably arousing. [/small]

Red Dead Redemption had some of the best voice acting I've ever seen in a game. The voice fantastic voice acting made all the characters that much more appealing, and the characters are the reason that the story in this game is so compelling.

For worst I guess I'd probably go with pretty much every JRPG ever made. Seriously, can at least ONE of these studios hire a decent voice actor when they translate their game?

So I forgot to mention my choice for worst acting. It would have to be Musashi Samurai Legend. The game was alright, but Musashi's voice ruined the entire thing. Not only did he sound like a girl but he lacked emotion and all that stuff you need for a good voice acting.

Sample of Musashi's horrible voice acting (Just the first minute or so):

One of the worst one's I've heard off the top of my head.

Got to the point where I just muted my TV every time I restarted the demo.

I really like the voice acting in Team Fortress 2. They are all really distinctive and memorable, while also being entertaining to listen to.
