Well the Wind Fish flying overhead kinda implies that it was more than just a dream
but yeah, it really was a shite ending.
Well isn't it kinda implied throughout the game that the island is just a dream of the Wind Fish.As soon as you wake him/her/it up the island vanishes so it's still technically all a dream sequence.Just not Link's dream

Then again I could be remembering it wrong. It's been a long time since I played it
No no, you're remembering it right. And yeah, I know...
...it's all a dream sequence. And you, and by you I mean Link, being an outsider, were the only one who could defeat the Nightmares and wake the Wind Fish; which was touted as your only way to escape the island. Of course it's not the fact that it's all a big dream that bugs me. What bugs me is that once you do all that you're left clinging to a piece of drift wood in the middle of the ocean presumably to die. That blasted Wind Fish couldn't even be bothered to give you a frickin' ride. It felt to me like all that effort spent in completing the game amounted to nothing.

Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
The three games that practically started me off on gaming as a kid. Three great games, and three games that I beat.
And to this day, I don't know how I beat Donkey Kong as a little kid, but can't figure out some of the levels now >.>
Oh, there were others, but there were my main three.
They taught me to pick up coins, dodge barrels, and run away from chickens.

Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins was the first Game Boy game I played, and one of my favorites.

Definitely Pokemon Red/Blue.
Alot of people forget that these were originally Gameboy games and not Gameboy Colour games, since they were both released around the same time. They still had that weird inwards corner that was unique to the Gameboy's pointless little "tab-that-stops-the-games-from-popping-out-when-the-power's-on" so they were in fact Gameboy games, not Gameboy Colour games, although I can imagine that they'd look a lot less cool without colour.
IIRC Gold and Silver had those two little tabs as well - it was Pokémon Crystal that was the first colour game, and also introduced the concept of gender.
