Hello Escapist memebers! Today I have a question for all those who like to play their games on shiny, state-of-the-art and presumably godlike PC's: Which PC desktop or labtop is the best for serious gaming. Specifically, I want a computer that is able to play games like Crysis 2 on the maximum settings while running at a consistent 60 frames per second (if that's even technologically possible). Other games that I intend to get are S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat, Skyrim, Company of Heroes, Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3, and RUSE. Now, the last 3 are RTS's, so they're not going to require as much computer power as a game like Crysis would, but I want both S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Skyrim to run at maximum settings with as little hiccups as possible (in the case of Skyrim, I want their to be little to no texture pop-ins what-so ever. In other words I want to have the best draw distance possible). Cost wise, I would prefer that the Desktop (or labtop) be anywhere between $2000 and $3000, give or take by about $500 (in other words, the maximum would be $3500. $4000 would be pushing it). So, proceed to enlighten about the best Desktops or labtops that would be able to fit my extreme demands.

Lol for that kind of budget ($3000) you could get a computer that could run 6 virtual computers all running all those games at the same time.

Let's start this thread out right by asking where you are from, where you want to buy it from and if you are going to undertake the task of building it yourself?

Why are you spending so much?

Seeing as you're spending that much you may as well wait until the new Radeon HD 7970 is out (9th of Jan) and get one of them.

Edit: That plus the above computer is pretty much what you want.

With PCs, you get what you pay for, and a $3000 computer would get you graphics on Ultra for years to come. That newegg combo that aircross posted looks amazing, and paired with a decent graphics card would make gaming a dream. It also looks awesome.

However, you might want to spend a little less on the computer. You seem somewhat inexperienced by your post (for a start saying labtops) (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) and maybe want to spend $2000 on what would still be an amazing computer, and getting a couple of nice monitors to go with it, and using the rest of the money for other things like food and alcohol. Just sayin'.

a 1200-1500$ computer will be 99% as good as a 2-3k one...spend that extra money on a 30inch monitor instead, it'll have a much bigger impact on your gaming experience =)

Despite having $3000 to spend it's stupid to buy SB-E chips for gaming.

OP, get an i7-2700K and have $1200 or so left for grsaphics cards rather than $500.
The 3930k would be a good bet, and a lot cheaper than the listed chip. Even so, anything past an i5 2500k is overkill.

To be honest, I already have a computer, and it does gaming okay, but I'm looking for something that will run these games at max settings without any framerate slowdown. I have little experience with buying computers, so that's why I'm asking. A new graphics card may be just all I need, but I have absolutely no experience with handling computer-related hardware, so I would have to get somebody to do that for me. If you want to just suggest a high-end graphics card, then feel free to do so.

PS: Should I buy a new sound card if I were to replace the graphics card?

Get these parts then(use Newegg and just search these keywords)

i5 2500k
560 tI
Intel MOBO
CM 690
800 Watt PSU
Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HD
8GB of RAM (DDR3, no offbrands)

I'm much to lazy to link you to all this but with this you can run the world, i7 is not needed and running a 6 core like me isn't necessary.

I agree with this. $3000 seems like wayyyyy too much to be spending on a computer when honestly something around a third of the price would play games just as well save perhaps a few tiny details here and there (Oh Noes I only get 35 fps when I put the AA up to 20x, whatever shall I do?).

The only real reason to be spending that much on a computer is if you intend to do a lot of software rendering or advanced design. Otherwise I'd say save the money for neat side stuff like a shiny massive monitor or a collection of games so big that in a pile it reaches to the ceiling.

Or a pony... I'm pretty sure if you shopped around you could find one for that price.

Start off with a nice ROG Asus motherboard and a hexacore AMD processor. Then minimum 8 GB ram and get yourself ONE AMD Radeon 6970 (or wait for 7970 as another member suggested). The reason you want one card is for both efficiency and cost. Not every game likes crossfire (or SLI for that matter) and it's a huge waste of money to buy 2 cards right now when nothing requires that much performance yet. Buy the 2nd and crossfire them when you actually start to notice you need more kick from your system. However when that time arrives I am sure you'll be upgrading more than just a video card by then.

Hell, you don't even need a 2500k. I have a plain ol' 2500, and it runs everything (including Metro 2033 with nearly everything on high) just fine. You can get that all for around $1000 bucks or so (if you don't skimp on the mobo and the PSU. Which you shouldn't). No need to spend 2000+ dollars. If you really want to, you could go overboard and get a fully loaded Alienware PC, but you don't really need to.

My computer is able to run everything I've thrown at it maxed with no problems, I think the trick is the massive amount of ram (16gigs), the six core 3.30ghz processor, and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580.

From what I can tell, from having built it and played with it at various levels of completion, it's really the ram that makes games run smooth, with a lot of ram your computer just has tons of headroom to keep things updated, I mean the graphics card helps but I feel like a lot of ram and a good processor are the most important.

To be honest, I'm just looking for a computer that makes things pretty without a chugging framerate. My current computer can play just about any game out there... on the minimum settings. Any time I try to raise the graphics settings, though, the game starts to slow down and look more like a slide show. I suppose getting a graphics would help out with that (and cost less in the long haul), but I have absolutely no experience with handling computer-related hardware, so I would need to get somebody experienced to put the graphics card in.

I have a i7-960 @ 3.2 (stock) and two gtx 570s in sli with an obscene amount of ram(24 gigs), and i can run everything on max, except the witcher 2 ubersampling on with 3d vision enabled(granted i haven't tried since launch and it might have been fixed). And the i7 960 is only like 200 bucks or so.

Generally speaking, no. Specifically, no. It has a Intel GMA 4500M Integrated Graphics. Intergrated graphics cards and gaming dont mix

Specifically, with Company of Heroes, I can run the game, but everytime there's a match that uses weather effects, my computer begins to slow down like crazy. I also want to put everything on max, from the physics effects to the textures, without minimal slowdown in terms of frame rate.
