Hey guys,

Looking for an RPG that I can play from time to time on my PC. It's not the greatest setup, so I'm kinda looking at older games.

What in your opinion is the best one to go for?
I don't even mind if its 20yrs old.

Well, you're in luck! www.gog.com is currently having a sale on classic DnD rpgs from the 90's, and they are pretty much all fantastic! And every single game on this list is either free or 3,49 US dollars(except for the steam game)

If you want more directed advise, then I suggest Planescape: Torment, which is often considered the greatest video game story of all time, and Baldur's Gate 1+2, which are considered the second best story of all time. Even though the first is just needed for context for the second one, where things really pick up.

However, I do not know how familiar you are with the Forgotten Realms universe and rule set. I wasn't and it was pretty hard for me to get into them, but well worth it. So, if you want something a bit easier to get into I'd suggest Fallout 1. It has a great story, teaches you everything you need to know about the mechanics from the manual and has a very interesting post-apocalyptic world. I really like the combat as well. I assume that you've heard of the series at some point in your gaming career. :)

On a similar note there's also Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Steampunk fantasy. I have not personally played this, but it is held in very high regards for basically the same reasons as Fallout. Well fleshed out, very interesting world, great combat and self-contained mechanics. Comes highly recommended (mainly cause I wanna know what you think) :D

If you want something not as tactical and not party-based, and a bit more modern as well, then pick up Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Modern day, secret society, vampire clan wars, with some werewolf and flesh manipulation thrown for good measure. Again: praised story, great setting etc etc. Sorry i'm just starting to get really tired of writing :p. The gameplay is basically Deus Ex, although not as well executed, mainly due to budget constraints. Don't let that discourage you though, this is up there with the all-time greats. (Just make sure to install the unofficial fan patch, the game's unplayable otherwise, and you can find it in the game's steam forum).

Just to cover all my bases and you just happened to be talking about MMO's, then I recommend Elsword Online a F2P Beat Em' Up rpg which basically does everything right. It's very easy to get into, and is very easy to just have casual fun in, as well as hardcore end-gamey stuff in. Cash isn't needed either, since the cash shop isn't obtrusive at all. watch this video if you wanna know more:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncEzChIE-OY
It's from a regular dude, who isn't an MMO expert, but does a very good job to explain a MMO's good and bad points, while giving an overall look at the game.

If you want something a little more similar to WoW, then I recommend Eden Eternal. I'm really getting tired now, so I'll just link to the same dude's video about that instead.

You can find all these games on gog.com except Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines which you can find on Steam (and the mmo's which you can find on their respective sites by googling). Some of them can be found on Steam as well, but Steam doesn't ensure that they are compatible with your computer, while gog does. Anyway, hope I have been of some use.

And that concludes the longest post I have written on here.

EDIT: By the way, I have assumed your PC is a midrange pice of hardware from 2007, so you should no problem running any of these. Also, I have no idea why the gog links don't work, but you can google it.

Is it any good? I was tempted but I'm not really a fan of Isometric RPGs that aren't turn-based.

Good post by Lugixx.

Speaking totally from personal experience/bias:

Planescape Torment is the best single-serving RPG of all time.

Fallout has the best setting.

Elder Scrolls is the largest/most popular at present time and will like have the biggest AAA offerings in years to come.

Witcher is the darkest/most adult.

Baldur's Gate is the most epic.

Ultima is the most ambitious, most ahead of its time, and arguably the best all around series.

Mass Effect is the most cinematic/emotional.

For older RPGs, if you want to touch on a battery of classics, I'd recommend Ultima VII and VII part 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Fallout 1 and 2, and Planescape Torment. If you want, you can sprinkle in some Arcanum and some Martian Dreams if you want some incredibly offbeat stuff and don't mind some clunky engines.

Basically, everything that Lugixx said (of those that I've played) is spot on. However, if you're looking for something a little different from those, I would recommend the older Elder Scrolls games, specifically Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Daggerfall can be really hard to get into. However, if you can, you are rewarded with perhaps the most massive RPG ever made. It has absolutely massive dungeon crawls, a near unlimited amount of things to do, and perhaps the best character creation of any elder scrolls game. Also, it's free, so there's really no reason to not check it out.

Morrowind is less massive, has less depth, and is less free when compared to Daggerfall, but it makes up for it by having an interesting and detailed world that actually feels worth exploring. Plus, it has a shitload of excellent mods out there, although if you're on a lower-end computer, you might want to avoid some of the graphics mods (especially the texture replacers).

Thanks guys, I've played allot of what you've mentioned but I have just purchased Fallout 1 from GOG to have a go. Can't hurt for $5...
I mean, I can get it free but then I have to fuck around with Dosbox. GOG save me the hassle for $5 :p.

I've got Fallout 3, but wasn't a major fan. I hear the originals are better.

I'll second all of Lugixx's suggestions. In particular, Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate series are fantastic. Planescape: Torment is more of a "thinking man's" game, in that combat definitely takes a back seat to dialogue and story progression. Baldur's Gate is arguably more well-rounded, but it's also more traditional with regards to its story and setting. That's not to say it isn't a great story, though.

However, if you are considering the Baldur's Gate series, I would suggest taking a look at the Enhanced Editions before buying them off GOG. There are some Enhanced Editions set to be released for several platforms this month. They will be more expensive, but the higher native resolution and other perks may be worth it to you. And since they're releasing for the iOS along with PC and Mac, I'm sure your rig can still handle them :)

If you prefer combat over story, the Icewind Dale series are great hack 'n slash RPGs and are on sale at GOG right now, along with the rest of the DnD games like Baldur's Gate. Icewind Dale II is also a little more modern, in that it uses the 3rd Edition DnD ruleset instead of the mutant version of the ADnD rules used in the Baldur's Gate series.

Older Elder Scrolls games might also be a good option for you. Many fans consider Morrowind to be the best in the series, aside from a few aggravating gameplay mechanics (specifically, the atrocious combat). However, the modding community for those games is vast and many of the unfortunate elements of the game design can be modded out.

The Legend of Grimrock is also quite good, for something completely different from the DnD and Elder Scrolls games. It's also available on GOG and Steam, as well as from the developers directly.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Oops. The thread took off while I was writing my response. A day late and a dollar short.

Definitely look into Ulitima VII if you haven't played it before - you'll be missing a little it of back story and a few of the in-jokes if you haven't played the previous games, but it's still an awesome experience.

Morrowind. it is (arguably) the greatest RPG of all time, and in my opinion it is. and if you have spent any amount of time on these forums i am sure you have read countless reasons why it so brilliant.

WARNING: it has absorbed well over 1000 hours of my life. be prepared for this to happen to you
I hold Morrowind in fairly high regard, and I think it's the best of the elder scroll series, but every title Lugixx posted is head and shoulders above it.

I'll second Arcanum and Fallout 1,2 and tactics...excellent games

Quite a lot of those games in the big lists however are rubbish or ancient so beware. Try them before you buy them

I'd say Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 I really enjoyed those games. Arcanum is decent too. :)

If you want something a bit more modern Dragon Age: Origins.

My personal favorite is Fallout 2 (Fallout 1 is great too, but I prefer 2 as it feels more open). Unlike the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale), it is turn based, which I prefer to the Infinity Engine's pause-and-play system. As previous posters have mentioned you can get it off of GOG for pretty cheap.

I consider Planescape: Torment to be the best PC RPG, I am sure others have suggested this already. Here are a few others worth checking out...
-Arcanum: Of Magick and Steamworks Obscura
-Might and Magic VI, VII, and VIII.
-Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines
-Elder Scrolls

I'm a fan of Half Minute Hero. I don't know if it would constitute as an RPG, but I sure think it does....just sped up to eleven. Either ways it's only out for the PSP, and it's shit in the Xbox. It will be released for the PC in Feb. 27 on Steam.
