Quest.
For.
Glory.
I cannot say this enough. It has a soft spot in my otherwise craggy cynical heart, because everything you do, or see, tells you that the people who made the games loved doing so.
For those who are too young to have heard of it (I'm 23, and even then I'm young for it, so, not your fault), Quest For Glory was a series of five games. You built a character based on Fighter, Magic User, or Thief.
And the game gave you different ways to handle the problems. So, when confronted with a minotaur patrolling the gate of a fort, the Fighter steps out of the bushes and kicks the Minotaur's butt in a straight-up fight, and breaks the lock on the gate by running into it a few times. The Magic User did a Calm spell (otherwise used to make enemies not attack), and the Minotaur sits on a rock and goes to sleep. Then he does an Open spell to open the gate and strolls inside. And the Thief relies on the fact that the minotaur has crappy eyesight, and shinnies over the fort's wall without bothering with the gate.
The other big thing was you could import your character's stats, equipment, and even money from game to game, giving you an advantages over a pre-made characters and letting you get attached to your guy.
Even though these were the 90's, one group got permission and remade the second game and has it available for free download. Give it a whirl here. http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/qfg2/ (This place has a couple of other maker-approved remakes)
When I found out about the remake, I dug out the old CDs and replayed them. Great times.
