Seriously though, it's the pinnacle of the platformer genre.

The graphics are timeless, and beautifully designed. The world is huge. The music is the best you are gonna hear on the SNES. The controls are PERFECT. The upgrades to your abilities happen with a natural incline of difficulty to match. The enemies are varied and interesting without becoming impossible.

The final boss fight remains one of the most memorable moments in gaming of my entire life (I'm 27)

The only gripe I can muster is that it is a little easy, maybe a bit confusing and backtracking but never really hard.

I would have said the same thing, plus that sequence breaking is a -lot- of fun and im 26.
Yes its easy; we mastered it years ago, but at the time Draygoon (until you figure out some tricks..) and Phantom (learn to never use super missiles) were the bane of my existence.

Final Fantasy VI and A Link to the Past are my two favourite 'retro' games. I'm counting 'retro' as 16-bit or under. As for PS1 and N64, I have another list for you..

Throw Banjo Kazooie, and Final Fantasy VII and IX for the PS1 on there and that's pretty much my list.

This, and the first Alone in the Dark.

Oh, Majora's Mask is a fantastic game. One of my absolute favourites. It's just so... dark, but not in the traditional 'blood on every wall, every character swearing at each other endlessly' way. I mean the whole world feels hopeless. It's bleak, surreal nightmare fuel at its finest.

Frickin' love that game. I think the score had a lot to do with the fantastic atmosphere.

Plus there was the fact that you could save people, yet next time you play they wouldn't remember you, because it never happened. It felt pretty isolating!

I haven't played it yet, as I got my N64 in it's death throes when it was really cheap. I might pick it up on Xbox Live if it's even better than Kazooie.

Mega Man 1-5, Super Mario 1-4, Metroid, Legend of Zelda...

All my favorite retro NES games read like a list of upcoming Wii games (well, excluding Mega Man last I checked).

Also, Life Force and Contra. I spent hours of my childhood memorizing the enemy patterns on every level of Life Force. Contra was great because my mom wouldn't let me get a game that involved killing people (they're aliens mom!) so when I played it a friends house every other day it felt like I was an awesome rebel.

PS1 - Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, Xenogears, Final Fantasy series, Einhander... lots of good stuff there as well.

Panzer Dragoon.

Best on-rails shooter ever. And it even came included on Panzer Dragoon Orta! Though Orta wasn't as good as the original to be honest.

I also played the Space Quest and Police Quest games to death on the ROM floppy disks.

Phantoon is easily the hardest boss if you are going for a speed-run.

Only recently have I mastered wall jumping, speed-ball, shinespark, skipping mini-bosses etc. It really speaks well for the game that there are so many ways to go about beating it, and none break the game. You can skip the grappling beam, but then you lose a really easy way to beat Draygon.

I just can't say enough about Super Metroid, in fact, I think I'm gonna dust of the SNES tonight and see if I can beat my old record, 44 minutes.
